you guys really need to chill out and not take things so seriously really. anywho. this was an experiment for my thesis on Nursing unions and strength in numbers. my theory is based in two parts rounded up by the theory that US Nurses are a stronger group hence why they are paid more, more respected etc and UK Nurses are weak etc thats why they get paid less. Thanks anyway. i appear to have gotten a first (an A) for a well written and insightful if not unusual study, which will go towards what is my second PhD.
Is it just me, or is anyone else a bit hopeful that someone from Allnurses.com made it perfectly clear that they will not be the platform for unethical "studies?" Clearly here, informed consent did not take place, as well as a whole other slew of violations of the Belmont Report, the Nuremburg Code, etc as outlined for ethical research.
Although I'm confused why a doctoral candidate would be working on a thesis rather than a dissertation, but anyway.
I would HOPE that rather than pointing the finger at bonafide Allnurses members for biting back at what turned out to obviously be a thread meant to provoke, that they would take a hard look at the post above and make sure this doesn't happen again.
If this very serious issue has already been addressed, I think we'd like to be reassured that we are in fact, safe here, and that this type of unethical practice has been deterred.
Thank you.
For the record: while others are PO'd at thread closings, I think the more serious issue is the performing of research on subjects without consent!.
Like Stargazer says, whether it's true or not we'll never know, but nonetheless it is creepy and weird and unethical. So, AllNurses will ban a bonafide member for using "foul language" but not a new member for breaking codes of the Belmont Report and Nuremburg Code.
I didn't know Allnurses was the platform for such practices. Thanks, I'll spread the word.
Originally posted by hoolahanme again, no you certainly aren't alone in feeling that way, but if there is no censorship, weirdo's like this get to stay, see the problem with that?? You can't have it both ways.
Linda, (not directed at you but using your post to illustrate a point)
So, cencorship has only to do with expletives and insults? Why is not performing research /psychological tests not part of that?
Sure we could argue that oh, well, we don't really think he is doing a study, etc etc. But at what point can you really determine that? At what point can someone use the words we type here in AllNurses in a study? This isn't that far off base you know. MY very own thesis consists of interviewing recovering alcoholics, to eventually find a pattern in their collective statements. Some of their words will be used and published, word-for-word, to illustrate that pattern. (of course, after informed consent).
There is no scientific method there. There is no "control" group. It's study about patterns of thinking.
We could also argue that a poster here could do this at any time, without our knowledge and how do we stop it? We can't. But when a poster comes right out and states he's using it for a research study, um, THAT needs to be addressed. Or should I spread the word to my graduate friends that hey! Screw the IRB etc! Wanna easy and fast way to interview?? Go on AllNurses! They don't care! Hell, you don't even need a real consent! We can just FAKE it.
I don't think that's good for membership.
Suzy, I didn't really address your issue at all, just the censorship stuff. Sorry to contribute to the straying of your original issue on this thread, a valid and serious issue I may add. Yes I do agree it is unethical, but I also doubt this guy truly has a PHd or is doing any legitimate form of nursing at all. I think his "research" was reading a few posts here and coming to a moronic conclusion. .
In other words TSTL...isn't that punishment enough? :rotfl:
Seriously tho, pm Brian if you really want him banned.

Susy,
I too apologize for your thread staying off topic. I was just confused by the mixed message I received from this post of yours. It seemed to me, at that point, that you weren't highly concerned and didn't want me to waste my time on it.
Anne;)
Actually, yes I am. Apparently you can only count on being moderated when you lay the smack-down on a hostile, aggressive poster whose sole intention was to provoke, as well as repetitively saying "blah blah blah." So I have to draw the attention of this to Brian regarding unethical research being conducted on his website.
What a poor image to paint of nurses.

Hoolahan.....I agree that Jay-Z can say what he wants but so can I. My point about the first amendment was that we should be able to say what we want even if people don't agree. JZ has the right to voice his/her opinion. So does everyone else.
Threads shouldn't be closed because a discussion becomes heated. I did not nor did anyone else threaten harm to this person. Every one of us voiced our thoughts and opinions. If you have a problem with that, then there is nothing I can say to change it.
If the powers that be want to ban me for expressing my thoughts and opinions, so be it!
