Nurses Job Hunt

I'm just curious to know, for those of you who are unemployed nurses, exactly how long have you been looking for work? What are you (LPN,RN,BSN-RN,MSN-NP,etc.) How many previous years of experience do you have? Where are you located? How many applications do you think you have placed? What about interviews? Add anything else that you want! Vent, tell us how you REALLY feel, give your opinions/outlooks on everything.

not yet, but I have another interview next week. We'll see.

scratch that, I got an offer (per diem) this afternoon! :-D Still going to interview next week as well-also a per diem postition.

I think hospitals should have to own up to how many people they hire are not citizens. .

Why?

You say "own up" as if they're doing something illegal.

However, the most decisive factor of getting hired is who do you know personally in a position of power,how well you know them(family member, close friend....) and how far they are willing to go to help you get into the facility. That trumps everything.

It's been my experience that the most decisive factor in getting hired is having at least a couple years of experience in the area they're looking for.

Ive only just qualified (february 2011) but there are no jobs in my area to apply for :( Ive spoken to matrons,sisters and ward managers, not to mention my university lecturers and they have all said the same thing 'dont worry you will get a job' which isnt much help when there are bills to pay and food to buy. The wards are reporting vacancies but those up there in finance wont allow the jobs to be advertised due to money issues yet they authorize agency cover for the vacancies. I cant even join the bank office as i need 6 months post grad experience.

My classmates who attended placements at the other hospital site have been given jobs, the hospital made 6month contracts for all of them but those of us from the other campus have been abandoned.

I'm also in OR. From what I've seen, it is virtually impossible for new grad RNs to get jobs in the hospitals here. :(

I am also in Oregon and was laid off 1 yr ago. I was a CNA for 20 yrs and was never out of work. I wish I had never gone to nursing school. Now I am out of work and owe a bunch of student loans. I would still be working and have a lot less stress. :uhoh3:

Yep, that's pretty much how I feel. I can't get any kind of job because prospective employers know or think that I will leave once an RN job comes through. I can't get a job as an aide or doing any other kind of direct care because of fears that I will practice as a nurse, regardless of the job title. Is it crazy to go and get the LPN? I have considered this so that I can apply to jobs for LPNs. I will do ANYTHING to get my foot in the door. I am so discouraged and downhearted. I am in limbo, I can't make any kind of plans or know what the future looks like (except dismal) because I am always looking for a job.

Really just down, down, down.

If I don't get a response to this question, I will post it in the General area - but why do you think that some of the hospitals are posting hundreds of RN positions as though they have openings but when I apply, they say that someone else with greater qualifications is available. Then when I go back to the postings a month or so later, I notice the same job is available. I apply and get the same response. Why do you think that is happening? These are for positions which I have experience. Albeit many years ago. :confused:

After 8 months of hearing absolutely nothing, I was invited to 3 different interviews in the span of two weeks (Neuro ICU, Trauma and Psych)

I can't really say that I did something special or different to finally get a call. I think it can be best summed up as:

"Throw enough mud at the wall and some of it will stick."

Getting the job offer is a whole other issue :)

Some are not really hiring.....they psot themto say to their employee's "See we are trying to hire" but they really aren't hiring.......they like running it "tight".

RN with BSN with 4 years experience in NH in long term care, research, 6 months hospital. unemployed for 8 months, countless online applications, just had 2 interviews. Got a job offer that wanted me to start in less than a week, requested a later start date due to insufficient day care, awaiting answer!

I feel compel to respond to your note. Sometimes life is trying to stir us in other direction but we want to force the way. Obviously you are a smart one. you should try health care administration or the military.
