Unconventional Strange Treatments

What is the strangest and most unconventional treatment you have ever given for you patient? Did it work?

I had a HHC patient who had a terrible itchy rash. She had it for months and many dg had been r/o, as well as she had tried evey treatment you can think of without relief. I mentioned it to the head WCN who advised we try banana peals. I used the banana peals by rubbing the inside of the peal on her skin where the rash was located. It worked!

Thanks for your replies! :p

I had a post partum C section who couldn't pee. She did not want to be cathed, and was very vocal about it. An LPN that I was working with told me to have her sit on the commode, crack a smelling salt and toss it into the commode hat. The patient ended up urinating 700 ml immediately afterward

Smelling salts: Ammonium carbonate/aromatizing ammonia

Contacts the mucos membranes "down yonder" and .................what?

Stimulates free nerve endings?

Creates hypertonic condition in the distal tissue?

Uhmmmm? That's interesting.

If it was pre surgical, where did she even get room for 800ccs?

Yowwwch!

If it was post surgical, don't they give fluids for that procedure? They did that without a catheter in place?

Not that I know crap about OB, but seems kinda risky in itself 2nd to stress since the stretch receptors tell you to void after about 2ooccs

Oh mommy!!

I've gotta go now.

She was 24 hours post-op and her catheter had been removed 6 hours earlier. The docs I work with give them 6 hours to void before cathing them after removal of the catheter. And she was unable to do this even after trying for several hours.BUT when she sat on the toilet backwards I guess it relaxed the right muscles so that she had success.

Sometimes a post-op c-section can't void after the foley catheter is d/c'd. The last place an epidural tends to wear off is from the nerves that innervate the bladder. At my hospital, most c-sections received duramorph epidurals and it seems to last a very long time for some women. If the catheter comes out before the duramorph has worn off, the pt can't void.

The unconventional treatment I have heard of is for post-partum women who are engorged using cold cabbage leaves in their bra to help relieve engorgement. I have pts on their third or fourth baby who swear by this.

My mother was bitten severely on her upper arm when she was a child. She said the doctor put wet cabbage leaves on the wound and the bleeding stopped almost immediately. She has a huge scar there but had no infection or any other problems.

I wonder if she peed in self defence so you would get her off the commode (couldn't resist).

We've used the cabbage leaves on Mom's breasts to help relieve engorgement and it works very well.

Also, a couple bags of frozen peas kept in the freezer work good as cold packs for engorgement because they can be molded to fit the shape of the breasts and can be re-frozen and used over and over... probably no good for cooking and eating after all that thawing and freezing though....

We've also had good luck when a postpartum woman can't urinate when we place warm water in a pan (like the plastic one that comes in admission kits to use for bed baths, etc.) and put it in front of the toilet for her to put her feet in. I suppose it relaxes some women and they are able to void with the cause of urinary retention is anxiety rather than the nerves still being numbed from labor meds...

Wet tea bags placed on sore nipples for about 10-15 minutes helps a lot for many breastfeeding women. Then, leave the nipples to air for a good 10 minutes afterwards. The tannic acid from the tea leaves is supposed to be the chemical that soothes them... I think.

Never tried it on a patient, but when the kids were small, and cut their lip, or bit their tongue, bleeding (and yelling!) could usually be stopped with a spoonful of sugar.
