A coworker was telling me of a MA student that was doing clinical in a doctors office. For some reason the MA student could not get the B/P of the patient using the arms, so she attempts to take the B/P from the neck !

Thank goodness the doctor walked in as she was inflating the cuff.

Scary.

Mind you, I wonder if this is not just an old college wisecrack of mine that grew legs and travelled... Our tutor asked us an off-the-cuff question one day, "what alternative sites are there for taking the blood pressure", and I shot back, "the neck" (my class was notorious for its wiseguys).

Um...you mean it's not ok to take a BP from the neck? I tried to do this with a surgeon once. I was reaching for the smallest cuff I could find for his pencil neck. I also asked him if I could autoclave his pager after it kept going off relentlessly with dumb pages from his buddies during tournament season.

A classmate of mine thought this method would be prefectly fine-and argued with our instructor. She did not make it out of the first semester...As far as the OP-I am betting it is an urban legend BUT haven't most of us come across some really, really un-educated,un-informed patients? Is this really so far -fetched?

too stupid to be true lol

nothing is too stupid to be true!

years ago, when i worked med-surg, we had students on the floor. one of the students came to me and said she thought i needed to do something about sally, a fellow student. "her patient is npo, and she has an order for milk of mag," she said. "so sally thought she'd give it in the butt." thinking i was going to prevent her from giving her patient a mom enema, i sought sally out only to find her just cutting the needle (we did that in those days) after giving 10cc of mom by im injection. she had two more 10cc syringes drawn up and ready to go.
