REMINDER!!! The deadline to submit your Fall application is nearing. As of now, the deadline has not changed from February 2 (short of 4 weeks away).
This is my second time applying--I was wait listed for the Spring term. Currently, I am studying to take my TEAS exam again on January 27th. This exam was the only portion of my application I was not confident in. I scored a 70% without refreshing my memory on key concepts by studying before hand. I did find the test to be a "you either no it or you don't" kind of thing so from personal experience--STUDY!
I have no outstanding prerequisites and my sciences are as follows:
AP1. -- B
AP2. -- A
CHEM -- B
MICRO -- A
I had the privilege of chatting with the last group of students and found this forum to be quite helpful! Please use this post as a way of communicating, sharing experiences, and giving advice. Hopefully, we will be classmates in the Fall!:)
Afowler77,
Great post. I've started Spring cleaning today in preparation to have a hernia removed--just to be sure I'm in tiptop condition for school.
Ive been saving recipes that are easy to cook and store in the deep freezer. I plan to cook and prep meals on Sunday for the week (breakfast, lunch, dinner) just to be sure I can manage the new load coming my way.
What is titer?
The concentration of a substance in a solution. If you haven't had certain vaccines the school will want to confirm that you have antibodies in your blood. Like if you actually had measles or chicken pox versus vaccines.
Hmmm, oh okay! Well that's no issue. I am current on all my vaccinations-- prior military so we were required to have EVERYTHING !! Except small pox (only if we were to deploy)
Hey guys, I wanted to know if someone has any idea about this question. So, my sister-in-law is 2 months pregnant and she also applied to UMSON fall 2015. If she gets accepted can she still go through with the nursing program or is there a policy against it? any ideas???
Two of my classmates were pregnant during adult health/med surg clinical. One of my classmates was pregnant her last semester. It's not an issue if the required classes/clincals can be completed.
Just random questions: what are some good scrubs to purchase? Shoes? Stethoscope? Blood pressure cuff? Any must haves? I recently purchased a rolling bag, any other "must haves?"
My advice is to buy cheap scrubs, especially tops, as they are not something you will probably wear after school is over. White tops show EVERYTHING and khaki may or may not be the color your hospital/unit allows for bottoms if there is a dress code. Some places do not have color dress codes so then the khaki bottoms will still be useful. But white tops? Nah.
I like my Sketchers GoWalks for shoes. I have a Littmann Classic II stethoscope with my name engraves (that I'll probably never use). I did buy a BP cuff to practice on and will take my own or my dad's blood pressure if needed at home even now.
Honestly, I barely ever went to open lab. I'm not sure I'd advise that but had many reasons why. Know your strengths/weaknesses, your future plans, and how you best learn/practice.
Definitely a planner. Just like described below. I think I know the exact planner they are talking about and it's truly a must have. I used it all through nursing school. (So glad to be using a normal sized one now!!)
A good planner. Put some good money into this one because it will help you. In your first week of classes, take all of the syllabi and put all of the assignments, quizzes, and exams in that planner because otherwise you will be lost throughout the semester as to what is due or what you should be studying for. I bought a $30 one from Staples and it has been so helpful. Get one that has both a month view and a day-to-day view with plenty of room to write things.
Also re: stress. The program (no matter which one) IS possible, no matter what you feel like in the moment. People have finished it before you, so you can finish it also. It's is possible to get A's in all of the classes (and I'm not talking 4.0, though that is possible but definitely not needed).
Also, I know there are a few current students in this thread, I cannot stress enough the importance of using your clincals to "sell yourself" if it's a position, unit, hospital, etc. you want to work at. I never thought I'd be one to get a job through networking, just not my thing, but apparently made a big enough impression during clinicals that I have my dream job as my first job. You're always interviewing when you're at clinical.
Hey guys, so my sister-in-law did call the admissions office and talked to the BSN person for admission (priyanka). She said it's totally a personal decision if someone wants to continue the program. The school however has no policy against if someone is or is not. She's definitely going to continue if she gets accepted. Thanks for the replies guys.

To piggyback on my previous post:
Hi everyone!
Try to not sweat these last few weeks of waiting or whether or not you are "ready for review" or "committee ready." As long as they have all of your application materials, then you did all that you need to do. At this point, the status means nothing until it changes to "admit-institution" or "provisional admit" (or not admitted, but we won't go there.)
I've said this the past several application rounds- just pay attention to the classes you are in now! This is crucial!
Next step: GET ORGANIZED! Create a filing system, or get an accordian file and use it for all your important papers and documentation. Make sure you know where things like social security card and tax records are. Be prepared to submit all kinds of information for school and for financial aid.
Get your immunizations. Locate all of your immunization documentation. Make sure your CPR training is up-to-date. Arrange
to get your immunizations, titers, and CPR training. If you have your vax's and CPR, but don't have the documentation, start tracking it down now.
Get your life in order. Things to clear up on your credit report? Tackle it now. Those wisdom teeth you keep meaning to have pulled? Do it now. Can't seem to find your social security card? Go apply for one now! If you have any loose ends in your life- personal, financial, health, car, transportation, family, etc...take care of them now! I have run into a few problems related to things like this, and let me tell you, it is almost impossible to resolve these things while you are in school. My only day off is Friday (sometimes) and that is NOT enough time to make important phone calls...and wait on hold forever. Granted, some of these things are not even my fault (I paid a medical bill and they lost all record of payment...after they took my money!) and I could not have anticipated that. But still, the less friction you have in your life, the easier things will be while in nursing school. It is really draining to take care of these things and worry about them while worrying about school.
Do your taxes! FAFSA! Get your finances in order. Apply for financial aid, or get ready to. This means having financial information at the ready.
Go to the Maryland Higher Education Commission website and apply for scholarships and grants. Contact your state delegate for scholarships. Polish up your resume.
Figure out what health insurance you'll have while in school. You have to have it, so might as well map out a few options now. If you aren't working while you are in school, you can go through the school's insurance or use the Maryland Healthcare Exchange to sign up for a plan.
Basically, I urge you to examine your life and look for all the minutiae and mundane details that you can resolve now. Really? you say. Yes, really. You have the time now, and it will distract you from the waiting game. It *seems* like you have so much time between now and August. Nope! It goes by really quickly. Make yourself the most organized you that you can be.
I remember what it felt like to be in your shoes. The waiting was horrible! Heed my advice! Learn from my mistakes! Step away from SURFS and use your time wisely. Once you are in nursing school, time will be your most valuable asset (and also your greatest enemy...says the woman looking anxiously at the clock, calculating how much time she has left to study and make dinner...) In the meantime, hang in there. May will be here before you know it, and then you will know your fate. Feel free to message me with any questions!
