UMSON fall 2016 hopefuls ?

Published

Hello all, I am planning to apply to UMSON in the fall 2016. I haven't seen a thread yet for other hopefuls and potential candidates. So I wanted to start one.

Specializes in CVICU.

Hi all,

My friend and I have both applied for the BSN program this Fall. Finally all of my required documents are showing up in SURFS... I was nervous for the past few weeks!

My GPA is not spectacular... 3.3 average and 3.0 exactly for Sciences (working full time and taking a full time courseload takes its toll)... My TEAS score was 88.7% (99th percentile!), I have great recommendations, was a volunteer EMT for 6 years, and have worked in a hospital non-clinically for the last three years. Even though I have not had clinical experience in the hospital setting, I have served on many committees and groups focusing on patient safety, hand hygiene, and TJC readiness- so I am hoping that will count for something!

Good luck to us all!

Hello all ! What campus is everyone applying for?? I remember last year being in your shoes ! Now I am a second semester traditional BSN at the shady grove campus, happily drowning in care plans and journal write ups and medsurg notes (yay!) lol. If there are any questions I could maybe answer feel free to send them my way!

Would you mind telling us your stats?

Hi everyone - My application status has updated with a decision section that says "Committee Ready." Exciting, but I am also quite nervous! (CNL Applicant)

Hey everyone, I just entered the traditional BSN program this semester. I thought I'd share a little bit of my experience with you. First, the communication that comes out of the admissions office is spotty and irregular. Once you see your status change to committee ready, be prepared for a nice long wait. I checked mine every day, and I was in the first week or so of acceptances (again, from info gathered from my classmates). It took two and a half months from the application deadline to see my status change to provisional admission. I did have an issue with a document they didn't receive (even though it was in the same envelope as other docs), so if it's a couple of weeks past the deadline and one of your docs hasn't been marked as received, that's the situation in which I would call.

We're a very well-prepared bunch here in Baltimore. I choose not to use the word competitive, because while we competed for seats at the table, now that we're in, there's a strong sense of camaraderie. We're banding together to tackle the difficult exams and practice our skills. If you make a buddy during orientation/SSIP, try to schedule yourselves into the same lab group. This is no picnic. My background in short, my institutional GPA where I did my prereqs was 3.8 and my science GPA was 4.0. I scored a 96 on the TEAS. I have never worked in healthcare. It's not so much that the content itself is difficult, but the rapid pace and sheer amount of content you're expected to master is challenging. Our first exam in one (of five) class(es) covered concepts from public health, epidemiology, anatomy/pathophysiology, social determinants of health, and pathopharmacology. It's a broad net and a lot of material to master. All of those concepts you learned in A&P, micro and chemistry are going to come back over and over again, so much of this so far has been review of those courses with a layer of new information or a new perspective on top. Of course, that's all while dealing with learning techniques for vital signs and assessments, learning nursing skills, and keeping up with (pretty light, to be honest) coursework in research and professional role courses.

But, don't be discouraged if your record isn't pristine -- they do consider the whole person as they decide who to admit. We are a diverse bunch in every sense of the word, and there are people with a lot of varied life experiences, of various ages and backgrounds. I mentioned institutional GPA where I did my prereqs -- well, when I first went to college (mumble) years ago, I didn't take it seriously. I was academically dismissed from a 4 year institution after two semesters with a GPA of somewhere south of 1.8. I disclosed that (sent in transcripts that were painful for me to acknowledge, if I'm being honest) and addressed it in my essay. They know that people of all types can become great nurses. Good luck to all of you, I hope to see you in Baltimore (if that's where you applied) in the fall!

I just want to let everyone know that it seemed to take FOREVER for my status to change on SURFS, even though a ton of people had already had their status changed. All I am saying is don't lose hope, until you get that last status change you never know what the decision is.

Would you mind telling us your stats?
Sure! My GPA was at a 3.4 overall when I applied, and I think I had like a 3.8 in my sciences, but I still needed to complete micro and chem when I applied, so I was originally a provisional admit until I finished those classes with at least a B. My TEAS was a 90.7

Great information oldbay - thank you! Do you happen to know at what point CNL applicants usually start hearing about interviews?

My application status also says "Committee Ready." I am very nervous, and hope to receive an interview in the coming months. I do not stack up well against other applicants statistically speaking. However, I do have my CNA, work/volunteer experience as well as an essay that explains why my GPA has dropped. I really want this more than anything, so I am hoping for the best. I hope for the best for you all as well.

I scrolled through my texts with my friend who was accepted last year, but I can't seem to pinpoint when she had her interview. As I recall, it was scheduled sometime in March, happened early April and she got her acceptance a couple of weeks later, but that's just my (probably faulty) memory.

hey all!

I am new to this thread and I submitted my application for UMSON's Baltimore campus somewhere around December. I had an 82% on my teas and a 3.52 overall GPA. However I took two winter classes that I did very horrible in failing one of the two. It brought my GPA down to 3.2 so I am not really sure what my chances are atm
