UMSON fall 2016 hopefuls ?

Published

Hello all, I am planning to apply to UMSON in the fall 2016. I haven't seen a thread yet for other hopefuls and potential candidates. So I wanted to start one.

CONGRATULATIONS EDELATE!! :) It doesn't seem like it took 3 weeks from your interview to decisions which is what I assumed they meant. Hope to hear from them soon. Thanks for the update!

Thanks Betibee3! Good luck - the waiting is almost over!! :)

Thanks for contacting them and giving us the update! I submitted my CNL application around the end of January too and I'm anxiously awaiting to hear from them about an interview! I'm keeping the faith because I know I have a seat at UMSON! 🙏🏾

Hi all! A great way to end the week - I found out late this afternoon I was admitted to the CNL program! Wishing all the CNL applicants and BSN applicants the best of luck as you start to hear back soon!

Whoo!! Congrats edelate! :roflmao:

I am just curious if people who applied for the traditional BSN check their application status daily (like me, lol)? If so, what does it say in the 'decision' section? Committee Ready?

I too am guilty of this :D. My Decision Made section also says Committee Ready.

Hi guys!!

I made the SPRING 2016 BSN thread last year and I have to say how much I LOVE this site!!! It was so nice communicating with others who were waiting ever-so anxiously as I! Well...I was accepted for the BSN program for spring 2016 at Shady Grove. I just wanted to say YOU GUYS CAN DO IT! The wait is frustrating but so worth it :) I also just wanted to offer some insight to those of you wondering how nursing school will be:

I was so nervous...I had heard horror stories and I was doubting myself so much...Orientation just confirmed those fears.....However, I have to say, it is NOTHING like I imagined it to be! OF COURSE it is a HUGE commitment. I devote myself 100% but it is NOT impossible! I have done EXCEPTIONALLY well on all the exams, and the material is not difficult, rather just a lot. You just need to balance your time and commit yourself. I know second semester is a different story, but first semester is just a huge adjustment. I feel like it is A LOT of A&P review. So take those classes seriously! I know I am doing so well because I put sooo much energy into my pre-reqs. I think during orientation they were saying that the program only has a 90% graduation rate...5% drop out by self-choice, and the other 5% do not pass.....And I am telling you, that 5% probably didn't study nor have a true passion. If this is your passion, NEVER GIVE UP!! It is worth the wait and it is worth all of the hours spent studying. I love this program and am so grateful for my experience thus far. However, no program can teach you how to care, how to be empathetic, and how to advocate for complete strangers. IF THIS IS YOUR PASSION NEVER GIVE UP! You guys can all do it :) :) :)

These are the things I WISH someone shared with me. Never doubt yourself. If you devote yourself 100% YOU WILL SUCCEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish you all luck and hope to see some of you next semester!! Please let me know if you have any questions (or book recommendations :p)

Hey casmithx95!

Do you mind telling us how your schedule looks like this semester? Do you have any days when you're not in class or at lab? If I get admitted (fingers crossed!!) I wanted to see what the possibility of working part-time was.

And thanks for all your input up there^ and being as supportive, if not more, as you were on the Spring 2016 thread :inlove:

I'm currently enrolled this semester, and my schedule looks like this:

Monday -

Health Assessment (Lecture) 9:00-11:20

Fundamentals (Lecture) 1:00-2:50

Tuesday -

Physio-Pharm (Lecture) 8:30-11:20

Physio-Pharm (Lab) 1:00-3:50

Wednesday -

Health Assessment (Lab) 9:00-11:00

Fundamentals (Lab) 12:00-1:50

Thursday -

Clinical Day

Friday -

Research 9:00-11:50

Professional Role 1:00-3:50

There are some caveats with the schedule -- Fundamentals lab only runs the first seven weeks, then you have your final validation and there's no longer a lab component after you pass that. Physio-Pharm lab has been mostly seminars, it's only a "lab" proper in the last few weeks of the semester. Clinical day is mostly a free day until halfway through the semester, you have two community health clinicals early in the semester on that day and then after spring break you start doing your clinical rotations at the long term care facility you're assigned to.

I currently work part time in the evenings usually until 8:30pm, and it makes me quite miserable if I'm being honest. I'm sure it's impacted my grades to some extent as I simply don't have time in the evening to study, or more importantly (for me and my learning style), free time to relax and let my brain process. This semester has been stressful, trying to juggle work and classes both, and I plan to move on from my position at the end of the semester. I will probably get a job as a student nurse after this semester, a position that I can work on the weekends (my current job is evening weekdays by necessity). If you can manage not working while you're in school, or if you can get a job that is in the healthcare field and work it on the weekends, I think that's the ideal situation. Otherwise if you're like me and need to work to cover your bills, do what you must and know that you're going to be very, very tired a lot of the time.

Wow, thanks for your very detailed response, oldbay! I really do appreciate it. I too have bills to take care of which is why I wanted to see if it was doable. So as much as I would not want to work during school, doesn't seem likely for me. If I am admitted, I'll definitely try to see if my supervisor will allow me to come in on weekends, since my position is usually a week day job. But thanks for the forewarning... and kudos to you for working AND going to school. Sounds exhausting. Pressure makes diamonds though!

I go to shady grove and my schedule is certainly different. I know there was a way to make it so you have no tuesday classes, but long days monday and wednesday...But this is my personal schedule:

Mon:

8-950 (health assessment)

2-450 (prof. role ---> we had online lecture for four weeks which was nice, but we are now back in session)

Tues:

10-1150 (health assessment lab)

1-250 (health promo/patho lab ... Which is now over as we wait to validate)

Wed:

10-1150 gerofundies

1-350 (path lecture)

Thurs:

10-1250 (research)

2-350 (Gero lab.. which ended week 7)

We have clinical three days this semester for gerofundies, and 2 days for health promotion. My clinicals are on saturday, but that was by choice. My friend made her schedule so she starts at 8am mon and wed but has no classes on tuesdays and has clinical for 5 fridays. It is definitely doable in my situation (no work) and I have not had a mental breakdown or really any major stress yet. It is all time management. Now if I was working, this was DEFINITELY be a different story!

Ohh I'm applying for Shady Grove! Interesting to know that the schedules differ a lot between the two locations. Thank you so much for sharing casmithx95 :)

And things come up last minute sometimes, so we were told do not schedule anything mon-fri..There are people who work (though I do not knwo how many) and MANY people with families! I give them major credit. I couldn't imagine..But it IS doable. Best of luck to you!
