UMSON BSN Spring 2014

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hi everyone! I created the BSN Fall 2013 topic, but I couldn't apply at that time due to family issues. So now I'm applying for Spring 2014! Anyone else applying? :]

Does anybody have more information on the supplemental document of the "Personal Essay", and what they are expecting out of it? Like how long it is and what it should be focus on? I understand that it is goals/objectives but anything else? One more thing I am wondering is how effective and of use it will be to the application. I am going to call tomorrow and ask but am a bit anxious to find out and can't stop thinking about it. So worried about this all and anxious to be done with it.

when you go to fill out your application it gives you the prompts to the essays.

They are incredibly important and are your writing sample

yeah. i basically fit my "personal essay" (a.k.a. statement of goals and objectives?) into the third 200-word essay section in the online application.

i'm guessing that it was different for last year, though.

from perusing the other topics on umson, i gather that user "Grey Lady" is a staff member involved with admissions for the shady grove campus. i found the following in the "UMSON Spring 2013" forum, pg. 2.

Your essay is incredibly important. In addition to showing you can write with NO spelling or grammar errors, it should show the admissions committee why they should pick you. It should answer any questions they may have about academic blemishes. It should show that you really do understand what you are in for in both the profession and nursing school and that you are totally committed to succeeding. The length should be about two pages double spaced. Imagine that you are on the admissions committee looking for candidates who will do what it takes to graduate. Let your passion for the profession show but be sincere. Nurses are, justifiably, very proud to be nurses. Statements that you are in it for the money, job security, or you are really a medical doctor wannabe who is "settling" are not viewed favorably. Do some soul searching. If you cannot write this, are you really sure about it? I do apologize for being so blunt, but it really does matter. A killer essay can and does make all the difference. Best of luck!

Oh, I did those. I mean the supplemental essay that is separate from the online application 3 essays.

Thanks for that quote from the other blog!! It helped lots, and yeah, the essays are different this time around. I was prepared for the old essay and then they change it up this time with the two 200 word essays.

So the personal essay has to be 200 words?

From the website I got the idea that the personal essay was separate and could be submitted with the application, if preferred. There was never any indication it had to be 200 words or less. I made mine about a page single spaced, so around 500 words. Hopefully this doesn't effect anything.

At the August info session, we were informed that the three 200-word essays within the online application would replace the statement of objectives/personal essay. She did clarify that the website hasn't be updated to reflect that.

3 more days 'til this application cycle is closed! Make sure you guys get everything in by tomorrow just to be safe. It's so weird that it's closing on a sunday as other posters have suggested. I look so very forward to keeping up with each of you and hopefully being the entering class of spring 2014.

I have a few friends in the program currently and they said how wonderful it is and that we will love it!

What do your friends say that they like about the program? It would be nice to hear feedback about nursing school aside from the typical 'it is competitive/difficult etc.'! lol! Is everyone trying for the Baltimore campus or Shady Grove?

I'm trying for the Baltimore campus as it's closer to my home.

Friends have said that the program is so interesting, their instructors are great, the facilities (mainly the library) is awesome. They've said the support for students is awesome, there are so many resources to ensure success. Have yet to hear anything negative about the school... except that maybe they're a bit unorganized in the admissions office! Haha!

i'm applying to the shady grove campus. i live literally 2.0 road miles from the campus.

i'm really excited about being a full-time student, focusing only on school (no regular job, extra-curricular activities, etc.). ever since i can remember, i've almost always had to do stuff other than just school (grade school through college. ok. maybe not back in kindergarten and first grade, but still...).
