UMass Boston Accelerated BSN 2009

Published

I'm in the process of applying to UMass Boston's Accelerated BSN program that will start in Summer of 2009. I'm wondering if anyone has any information about the program. Has anyone applied? Has anyone been accepted or heard back?

Also I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the housing situation. I've done some research and they said they were going to build residence halls to make the University more appealing to students who don't live in the area. Does anyone know if they have started the project or when they are going to start it?

I look forward to getting a response! :nuke:

Couldn't agree more! Although I had a bad feeling about UMASS from the get-go. After leaving their orientation and listening to the woman who is in charge of the program, I felt extremely anxious! I found her to be a terrible speaker, very unprofessional, and she kept emphasizing her negative experiences in nursing. I quickly decided to apply to Curry, where I had the complete opposite experience. Dr Nugent, is a first-class act. Great orientation, wonderful program director, and clear conscise information...without any negative BS. Anyway I was also rejected from UMass, and thankfully so! Hopefully you will get into the other schools you applied to, becasue trust me, this is a blessing in disguise!!!!

Pinkemme you're so right!!! I never attended the info sessions for many reasons:

1.I used to work at UMB during my senior year in college I landed a full time job there, so I kinda knew the people in charge for this program and I didn't bother. 2.I picked UMB as a safety school, applied very early, they lost my file and found it after the application deadline whoo whoo.

It is a blessing indeed, I requested a refund of my application fee, since they overcharged me, their answer was MAYBE . what a joke.

My first choice was Umass Med. and they accepted me over the phone 2 days ago. Now I am having second thoughts about that program as my friend just finished her first year direct entry and she said it was a nightmare of schedule conflict.

I think I would totally pick Simmons if I got in, I live in Shrewsbury, and mostly everyone I know in this area goes to Umass Med for their visits. It would be a little awkward to run into acquaintances every day ha ha

Caroline 82,

I did not pay for the UMass application becasue I was alumni??? You shouldn't paid the first place!! Also, just the application process was a nightmare!!! It took over 10 phone calls to pinpoint the 'right' application because I was alumni. When I finally went their in person, I was sent to 4 different offices until the FINALLY found the right application for me. Thank God I didn't have to pay anthing to apply, espcially since I didn't ge in!!! Curry was my first choice, and UMass was merely a backup school, but a poor one at that!! Don't know that much aobut Simmons, but suspect it's a good program. I hear from Curry April 1st; the wait is killing me!!

Oh No, those people fooled me!!! They said it was $20.00 for alumnis, and $40.00 for non. Liars!!!!! I am so mad right now. That's it, I am calling Monday demanding my $40.00 back. I've had enough of their irresponsible staff . It was like that when I worked there, bunch of BS. The administration is related, I swear, I worked with a woman, whose brother worked in the mail room, mother in law at the registrar's, sister for the Dean, brother in law for the chancelor, sister in law for the financial aid, and so on. They all used to have lunch together at noon, Brady's bunch I used to call them. They were not the only ones who were related, so many others too, husband and wives working side by side, mothers and daughters...To heck with that kind of administration. I felt I was the only one without family members at UMB, even the custodians cousins worked there.

I will ask for a full refund , I am sorry you felt the same way about the application process. Keep in touch :-)

I will keep in touch!

As I said consider it a blessing that you didn't get in....the coordinator is very nice, but also very new in her position, & I get the sense that she doesn't know what is going on yet. I would talk with her about the application fee. I didn't have a fee, and they made a point to say that Alum's app fee should be waved at the LAME orientation I attended, so you should receive a full refund!!

Hello all!

Unfortunately I got the dreaded letter earlier this week as well. :( But from everything I've read in the last few posts, a letter of rejection from UMass may not be such a bad thing. As someone else stated in a previous post, because the program is still fairly new, they still have LOTS of kinks to work out. I don't know if I could take the disorganization. Because the program is so short and intense, I feel that everything has to be VERY well planned before hand. Otherwise the poor students are forced to stress about things like the schedule and clinical locations, when they have more important things like the actual material to worry about!

I'm definitely going to keep applying to nursing programs. I so badly just want to start working as a nurse! I can't wait! Anyway that's my little blurb! Good luck to everyone!

Have a good weekend! :)

Hello, I just received my Acceptance Letter for the mass Accelerated BSN Program starting ths Summer. I am Nervous but very Excited! I am Male and this is a big change for me. I worked in Construction, Banking, and any Non-Health Care setting you can think of :wink2:. I went back to College in my 30's and finished my B.A. in Psychology in 2007, and finished all the Pre-requisites for the Accelerated Program in 2008. I am worried about my Lack of experience in a Hospital setting, but I am looking forward to the Challenge. I have a Greater appreciation for Nursing after being involved with my Father's bout with Colon Cancer. I do much of his Ostomy care and have helped him with Catheter issues and everything else. I think it's much more difficult when it is a Family member that is dealing with health related issues. Sorry to fly off topic, but I would love to hear other people's stories about choosing Nursing :typing. I actually was shocked that I was accepted, I knew I had the Grades, but I applied late and thought that it was to late to be accepted. The Interview went Incredibly well. I asked the interviewers what she thought about Men in Nursing and she told me she wished more Men were in this field. The Interview lasted for almost 60+ Minutes and went Great. I had my Interview on a Wednesday and was called the next day by my Interviewer that I had been accepted. Can you say " Surprised " :). I wish everyone luck who applied to the UMass Boston Accelerated BSN 2009. Hello Classmates!!!! See you in the Summer! :wink2::wink2::wink2:

I'm in the process of taking pre-reqs right now. I was a UMass Amherst alum...double major BBA. I didn't have the greatest undergrad GPA - 2.75, but I worked 20hrs a week, double majored and did internships. I know that probably doesn't really count for much but I have a 4.0 in my pre-reqs. I'm not applying until late this year/early next yr (to UMass Boston)...I am applying to several in the boston area. I just am feeling so discouraged - seeing all these postings from people who got rejected with much better undergrad GPA's than me. I have worked so hard on these pre-reqs...getting a perfect 4.0...while working 40+ hours a week in a finance job (I currently work for an investment firm)...it hasn't been easy. I just feel like maybe this isn't even going to happen :(

What are the options if I can't get into an accelerated program? Can I transfer all my gen ed undergrad credits and just work on a regular bachelors of nursing? How long will that take, if anyone knows.

Congrats to those who got in!

So upset, I just found out I was rejected from Umass Boston. O well, I guess if it's not meant to be, it's not meant to be. There were like 300 people applying for 30 spots.

Hi Bill

I don't know if you still use this site but I wanted to ask you if you decided to attend UMB accelerated nursing program and you're experiences with it. Are you happy with the program? How many of your classes are online? Where do you have your med-surge clinicals?

I am also interested in hearing from Bill. I have an interview Monday. Do you have any advice?

Hello, I know this is an exciting and nerve racking time waiting for your interview and hoping to be accepted into a Nursing Program. My interview was very laid back, I was asked why I was interested in becoming a Nurse, my background, and if I was ready financially to do this program because they emphasize that you should not work during it. The interview for me lasted about 45 minutes and I was talking to the head of the accelerated program and another instructor, I was just being myself and showing how taking care of my Father with Colon cancer and other various health issues made me think that the Nursing profession was for me. My grades and solid work history was a Plus, I have a B.A. in Psychology and always wanted a job helping people. I came from working in Construction to now wanting to become a Nurse. I had never had any experience ever working in a Hospital setting, so I thought this would hinder my chances at being accepted. I was amazed that I received a Phone call the next day saying how impressed they were with me and telling me I had been accepted into the 2nd cohort of students for the Accelerated BSN Program at Umass Boston!!!! I was very happy, but nervous at the same time because I knew that my life would have to change for the next 15 months. The first semester was intro to nursing, health assesment, etc, we spent most of our time in the CCER which is on campus, it has the Sim-man dummies that you get to start working on your nursing skills (I.V's, injections, Trache care, Oxygen delivery, etc) and your in the classroom as well. We didn't go to the Hospitals during the first semester which now looking back, they should start you working in the Hospitals at day one to get the experience. I did my adult health clinical rotation at the Whidden Hospital in Everett and loved it, and my Psych rotation at the Cambridge Hospital which was good as well. Next I did my Maternity rotation at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton which was for only 3 weeks monday thru Friday 7am to 5pm 2 days are clinicals and three days ar We started out with I believe 3e class, this was very intense, but the Instructor was Incredible. I am now in spring which consists of my Community Health clinical at the VA Hospital in Jamaica Plain and my Pediatric rotation at Boston Medical Center and an Online Ethics class as well. I have been doing well so I am Happy. We started out with 35 students at the beginning and now have 29, there are 4 male students and I am one of them and the rest are females. I can't stress enough the importance of doing well on the Exams at this school, if you don't pass there exams, you may be dropped from the program. Study NCLEX style questions!!!!!

This is only the 2nd class for this program and they are still working on ways to make it better, but its a learning process. For me, I just show up everyday and try to take something from every experience that will make me a better nurse, there will be drama because you are with the same people for 15 months, and it's like a dysfunctional family at times. But remember, study, be proactive in your learning, and be nice to people, it sound simple but you would be suprised how people can be in this profession. Also, find a group of people like I did, who want to do study groups, I have made some incredible friends and we have each other's back's. it's so awesome when you find a group of people who want the whole group to excell. What else did I leave out?????:)

Nursing school is what you make of it, you are going to be doing patient care, like giving medications, assesments, vital signs, body baths, changing adult diapers, cleaning poop and pee, dealing with angry patients and families, catheters, making beds, feeding patients, dealing with Psych patients, and the list goes on!!! I try to make the most of any experience I have had good or bad, because at the end of the day I am a Student and I am just starting to learn how to become a Nurse. Good Luck to all, and sorry for the Longggg Post, I am a bit stressed I have a Hesi exam this week and my First exam for pediatrics:yeah:, prepare to always be busy!!! Best of luck. billjeff1
