UK nurses overseas - maintaining NMC registration

Published

OK, so the rules have changed, and CPD is no longer enough.

I'm wondering about how to achieve the "reflective discussion" part when there are no UK registered nurses where I work.

So, all expat Brits, please let me know how you plan to maintain your NMC registration. Is anyone agreeable to contacting me, with a view to maybe planning an email/Skype discussion that we both can document?

I'm in Chicago btw, so if there are any other UK nurses here, we can meet in Panera instead : )

OK, does the CPD needs to be necessarily from a UK organisation? Thanks

I don't think so, as long as it is accredited RN training.

I'm in Chicago, and I used US CE for this, including course attendances that had CE hours stated.

OK and do you think the CPD need do be done necessarily in English language?

You would have to ask the NMC. There is a FAQ section somewhere, and also an email address for questions.

Hi All

I am in a similar boat - I’m an English nurse in Australia and my UK registration is up in August. Happy to do a swap on the reflective part so we can sign each other off? Regards sarah jane

Hi,

That would be great.
I’ll shoot you an email shortly

CPD is CPD, my advice would be if it's in a different language then write a reflection around your CPD in English to evidence relevant learning.

Aa a confirmer I would accept that

Yes I'm going to have a look on their site or call directly. If it's OK in another language yes XB9S I will totally right it in English, in the best way I can write it?. Thanks!

There is an email address somewhere in the FAQ page, I would use that first, to get an answer in writing. They tend to take 1 to 2 weeks to reply, but they do get there in the end!

I wouldn't waste time calling them, especially from overseas, you will just get moved from dept to dept, and get nowhere. : (

Hello everyone, hope you are fine? I just called the NMC ( registration enquiries not international enquiries) the man confirmed that the CPD trainings need to be done in English, so I've done all the hours requested. However, I'll have a look on line for CPD about first aid - safe medication - emergency care, as I need to renew some knowledges as I worked mostly psychiatric hospital ans I think if I apply for nursing care in other services hospital they may ask me about these sort of trainings. I'll do it this week. Thank you to you for your help, it's really generous and supportive to help us!

You could look at the Royal College of Nursing, they have CPD modules on their website

I'll look today, thanks!

You might not be able to access RCN CPD if you are not a member though?
