uk nurses who have come to the usa

Published

I am in the usvi, and have been here nearly a year, maybe all the nurses who have posted their news about immigration, can now post about the differences in the us hospitals. I dont think that american doctors and nurses fully understand where we come from, and the working environment of the nhs, its only when we get here that we can understand the differences. I am sure that stateside hospitals are different even from here. and that they also vary from state to state, but maybe nurses who are waiting to come will be able to pick up some tips and know more than us what to expect.

christine....from wales to scotland to united states virgin islands, and then to the states, in january.

hi kay, dont know where in AZ yet, the agency will arrange it all nearer the time, it will be for a 13 week assignment as a travel nurse, everything is all set to go, as soon as I am finished here. my son is also in the navy, he lives not far from fort brockhurst...he's just back from singapore. the majority of people in gosport are there because of the navy.

looking forward to trying somewhere new in january, I have been studying maps of the states and surfing the net for info about hospitals and places.

I am a mancunian though was married to a navy guy, still married to him he's now a copper. he has to work for a living now:rotfl:

I live near the fort too, but hey i guess everybody does. One of the HCSW at work he actually lives in the fort. He is the custodian. are you staying with OGP? I am off to Phoenix on the 17th to look for a house etc, so excited now but trying not to be.

hi kay, no I have looked at other travel agencys and have chosen one that has better pay and perks than OGP, at least I am hoping that when my assignment is arranged that will be the case. OGP will still want to employ me but I have signed up with another agency and told OGP that if they dont offer me a good deal then I am off. OGP have been ideal for the immigration and 18 month contract that I have had with them, but after you come here and look at hopitals and other agencys you will find out that they are not always the most competitive in the states.

I am surprised that you are coming to the us so close to your emigration, we were told not to travel for about 6 months before moving, the american immigration will have you listed as a future emigrant and usually think that you are trying to come here illegally before the paperwork is completed. my friend who was coming to the us was questioned by them when she travelled a few months before she actually moved here.

anyway be prepared, and the best of luck with house hunting.

Apparently OGP claim they told me not to travel 4 months prior to emigration, they are not best pleased with me at the moment. I was never told or else wouldn't have booked it. I am aprehensive about travelling now but thanks for the advice. I hope they are not too hard with me at the airport, but now I know at least I will be prepared.

OGP told me not to have any holidays 4 months prior to travel but not due to immigration problems- it was just incase my interview was scheduled during those months and they wouldnt be able to change it.

i understand where they are coming from, but, surely they must see that being able to travel to see the hospital you will be working in is a good thing as it will alleiviate some of the stress you feel about moving, i know if i knew where i was going, and could afford it, i would be there like a flash to check it out!

incidently where is it you will be working?

i am hoping to go to the same place as you, fingers crossed!! i supose it depends on where OGP are sending people to at the moment, they have already offered me an interview for louisiana which i turned down.

was az the first place they offered you? it looks very nice there compared to some of the areas they are recruiting for at the moment.

ive got 2 children, 10yrs and 11yrs so i feel the same really its not so bad if there is just you or you/partner to think of.

you will have to let us know what it is like!

hi english nurse, you must be close to coming over here if OGP have offered you an interview. apparently st joes are building a new tower extension, dont know when it will be completed yet. OGP apparently send quite a lot of nurses to arizona.

best of luck

I loved working at TMC. They have two types of telemetry units there, unit 500 has about 5 patients per nurse, and 550 has 3 to 4 patients per nurse.

ICU is 2 patients per one nurse.

Most work 12 hour shifts, either 0700 to 1900 or 1900 to 0700.

Are you going as a direct hire or thru an agency. If thru an agency, remember that your salary will be different if your agency pays all of your immigration fees, etc.
