uk nurses who have come to the usa

I am in the usvi, and have been here nearly a year, maybe all the nurses who have posted their news about immigration, can now post about the differences in the us hospitals. I dont think that american doctors and nurses fully understand where we come from, and the working environment of the nhs, its only when we get here that we can understand the differences. I am sure that stateside hospitals are different even from here. and that they also vary from state to state, but maybe nurses who are waiting to come will be able to pick up some tips and know more than us what to expect.

christine....from wales to scotland to united states virgin islands, and then to the states, in january.

Well we send money to my hubbys EX in wales and we do it thru Paypal. They do the exchange rate for FREE so thats the best part. The money goes from our bank acct. to her paypal and then she can transfer it to her bank online. Its very easy and I wouldnt do it any other way.

Yes you want to start a good credit history here so I would apply for a few credit cards and use them wisely. Best is to use the card and pay it off that month. I recommend Amex Blue..they gave me a Wonderful credit line and doubled it immediately with I asked. Do you have your SS#? Believe me..its the number you need for Everything!! It takes a few months after you get it for you to show up in Experian, TU and Equifax with a credit rating..but it will happen! My hubby could finally access his rating last week and he has no credit cards himself yet..just an authorized user on a few of mine. They rated him 730 which is very good!! So theres a few tips. Good luck!

Thanks to all for the ideas re AMEX card. Will definitely try these out.

We will be selling up before we emigrate and will hopefully have a fair amount of equity to invest in US real estate sometime after we get to the US. Without sounding as if I'm too tight fisted to go to a financial advisor, has anyone experience, or know a (wo)man who has, of how to transfer a large(ish) amount of cash to the US at the most beneficial rates? I've thought that the simplest way would be to maintain a highish interest account here and transfer our funds to the US when decide to buy - however, as everyone knows, the exchange rate is most favourable at the moment and hopefully will be in the next 6 months or so allowing us to maximise our funds if we transfered before we emigrated. I guess we would need to be living in the US to have a bank account. Is offshore a better bet?

Obviously, I wouldn't wish to be seen as wanting to evade the US Tax system :uhoh3: but is there anyway to avoid shelling out vast amounts of money?

Any advice would be brill.

Cheers

I am an LPN and make about $18.80 a hour...and new RNs make about $23.00. Im in NJ and yes it makes all the differance what state you're working in.

are you quoting dollars or pounds?

$60,000 sounds a lot for a new grad...thought that they only earned about $17 an hour and that would be about $35,000 a year. thats with a hospital, not with the travel nursing agencys as they have to have a years experience to become a travel nurse.

What states in the USA pay the highest and the lowest for RNs? :balloons:

Typically the further north you go the better the pay is BUT the higher the cost of living is also. California is also a high paying state for nursing but it costs an arm and a leg to live there.

Lowest? Look on the LPN section here and they have a post with nurses all over the country quoting their pay. Down south is low paying..IE Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana ect.

Good luck!

The pay is worse than I thought it would be :scrying:

nice to talk to everybody on this site...yes I have a welsh connection, trained originally in south wales where I lived for a long time but came from scotland which is where I was born and grew up as a child. still living it up in paradise, just worked 2 very long night shifts so I am chilling out before going to the beach on my day off tomorrow. both shifts were 17 plus hours long as I was covering for other staff. just listening to the music from the local beach hotel which is having a full moon party tonight lots of live music.

Nice to meet you cariad! My hubby is from Wales, moved here 3 years ago so your post caught my eye! He tells me the differances in UK nurses to USA nurses and I imagine its quite a feat learning how we do things differantly!

I work with several nurses, one from Canada and one from Africa who got their jobs at the hospital in exchange for their green card..so we encourage each other as I'm helping my hubby with his immigration.

Anyway..just wanted to say Hi!

Hi folks,

I guess I can post here now as I have been in California for a whole 16 days now!

Biggest problem has been that very useful social security number. Nothing much can happen without it.My local social security office won't even look to see if I am in the system until I have been here for three weeks.Howwever, I started work on Monday and low and behold, on the top of my orientation sheet was my name and.....a social security number.Appears OGP had it by then and gave it to the hospital but I still haven't received the card.

Now I just have to stop comparing everything and settle into living here.

Janet

Gosh it all seems to have happened quickly for you. Hope you settle in soon. OGP told me that the first six weeks are the worse and then it settles.

Just an aside, but was talking to a collegue who worked in the US last year - I can't believe they only get two weeks annual leave a year!!!! I don't know if my body could cope with going from 28 days off to 14, lol :)
