uk nurses who have come to the usa

I am in the usvi, and have been here nearly a year, maybe all the nurses who have posted their news about immigration, can now post about the differences in the us hospitals. I dont think that american doctors and nurses fully understand where we come from, and the working environment of the nhs, its only when we get here that we can understand the differences. I am sure that stateside hospitals are different even from here. and that they also vary from state to state, but maybe nurses who are waiting to come will be able to pick up some tips and know more than us what to expect.

christine....from wales to scotland to united states virgin islands, and then to the states, in january.

when i came here over 3 years ago, i didnt need to get my credentials verified, and now for a couple of licences that i have applied for and got they want it done, so 18 months ago i applied to cgfns and paid for it, and am still not got it completed, the latest now is that txice i have sent the form to the nmc for them to fill in to verify my registration, and they still have nt done it. the latest letter from them is asking for 34 pounds and asking where i want the stuff sent to, and i have to get the conversion course part from the scottish university where i did it. so it sounds like yet again, that they are not returning the form and dont understand what i am asking for. they hold the verification for level one and two, so will have to contact cgfns yet again and the nmc. its constantly a pain trying to get things done, even when i am here for so long and when cgfns have already had all my transcripts through the ihcp department nearly 4 years ago. dont know why everything all has to be repeated.

I know I'm not from the UK but I have a question someone might be able to answer.

I was wondering how you went about buying a house in the US before you actually went there to live. My husband is American and we are in the process of moving over the Vermont. We were going to rent a house but then I got to wondering whether we could just buy one before we left.

Anyone have any ideas?

its easy to buy a house over here, even if you dont live here. it will be classed as a second home as you are a non resident or green card holder. they use your credit history from your home and you may have to put a larger deposit down. its a good idea as most rentals are for 12 months and they are expensive to get out of if you decide to buy after a couple of months.

Come north. The more north you come the better the salary. I make over $30/hr working night shift at a Delaware Hospital. They will pay for your classes to prepare you for NCLEX too if you need that.

Of course the cost of living is higher too..

Thanks for that Silverdragon 102,

I'll go onto the CGFNS website for details. From that I've read in the threads, Florida is probably not one of the best places to work (ie., salary, working conditions, hours..). I have a chance of acquiring a property there. I would consider selling and moving elsewhere, if it was worth the upheaval. Where might I feasibly look for a reasonable-to-good standard of living?

thanks for the quick response silverdragon and top scot. prepared for a bit of a long haul but my husband has still got 2yrs of uni left in his nursing studies so thought now would be the right time to apply. live in the west end of glasgow, have been there for 10 years. just so relieved to have finally qualified:balloons:. how has ogp been with you topscot. read some not too encouraging things but my aunt went with them and reccomended them to me. she has been in az for 8 years now and its like my 2nd home. have you been before?

You don't need to go with a hospital and one of the members is in AZ at the moment and managed to find a hospital to petition her. If you start the process now you will have more than enough time for hubby to finish uni. Agencies can't always guarantee finding you hospital in area you want. Many hospitals in Phoenix will petition foreign nurses but be aware of retrogression and no idea how long it will last

There are a few UK nurse meet up on a Tuesday evening 8ish in the chat if you want to join us, need to have 15 posts or more or upgrade your membership. Usually have a laugh as not all are planning on going to the US

thanks for the invite....hopefully be there to enjoy the 'banter'. spoke to ogp about the retrogression issue and they think that because i am so far from actually starting the whole visa process that it should be lifted by then, but you never know. do you know of anyone else who has done the 'make up hours' course at brighton uni? so glad to have found a chat room like this. its so full of fab info x
