uk nurses who have come to the usa

Published

I am in the usvi, and have been here nearly a year, maybe all the nurses who have posted their news about immigration, can now post about the differences in the us hospitals. I dont think that american doctors and nurses fully understand where we come from, and the working environment of the nhs, its only when we get here that we can understand the differences. I am sure that stateside hospitals are different even from here. and that they also vary from state to state, but maybe nurses who are waiting to come will be able to pick up some tips and know more than us what to expect.

christine....from wales to scotland to united states virgin islands, and then to the states, in january.

i just wanted to post on this thread in particular, as i started it such a long time ago. there have been good times and some tough times since we all came here. because of allnurses we have made some good friends, madwife and betty boop and soon we hope english nurse and the owains. we have become a network of uk nurses helping each other with information and sometimes more.

i have been feeling a bit down as my dh and myself were in a car accident on oct 6th and have had all the problems that go with it, have just found out that i need to have surgery on my shoulder because of it, luckily enough i have been able to continue to work and will either side of the surgery as well, because basically if i dont we dont get paid, and we have a mortgage to pay.

but at the same time i have been elated as we are taking a trip to visit dh's son next week.

we are also building up to spending xmas with good friends and are both making the most of it.

so just to say that we wish that all the nurses who want to come here and are going thru the process, we do think of you all and wish that it was more problem free. we do try to give information to help you make the transition.

sorry to hear about your car accident - hope your future surgery goes well for you too.

i agree with the good times and bad times over here - we have been here 13 months now and seen our share of them - also had an accident and broke my arm but over all that now....plus other stuff too....just starting to feel settled now and looking forward to xmas this year a lot - but will miss family & friends back home.....

hey everyone, we have been having some tough times as most of you know, but we are enjoying ourselves so much over here compared to the uk. the weather for us is definitely a plus, and the longer we are here the more we find out about things.

[color=#a0522d]even having our taxes done is a learning experience even now after nearly 3 years. this is the third time that we have filed and we still have problems with what we are allowed to claim and what we cant.

[color=#a0522d]the biggest thing is what we could miss because we dont know.

[color=#a0522d]some people have huge amounts back, but we still have to find out how they do it.

i know what you mean about taxes, we just did ours yesterday and like you its varied a lot, the first year as we hadn't worked a lot we got a substantial rebate, much more than we'd paid, last year we owed and this year we're getting a little back.

for us the kids seem to be the big tax break, though obviously the mortage interest is good too.

this year we were asked if we made long distance phone calls and without any proof we were given a $60 credit, not sure what thats about.

we were told to itemise and claim all sales tax back and as were still buying furniture etc that was a quite good sum too.

i wish i could tell you a guaranteed way to get a good rebate.

we moved from st croix to the mainland last january, i travelled for a while but have now settled, tried to claim for setting up home after moving and was told that we couldnt. we couldnt bring much with us from the island. we had to sell the contents with the condo, as its too expensive to ship.

we went to jackson hewitt, did you go to an accountant or one of these tax places?

by the way the long distance calls, is a new tax law that came in and it was back-dated.

we went to h&r block and when was the telephone tax backdated to?

not sure about when the calls were badkdated to, but i think more than a year, but i could be wrong,

we filed with jackson hewitt last year and because we had been in st croix for the whole of the previous tax year, they filed them in the virgin islands for us, and we ended up paying back.

so we returned to jackson hewitt again, and although they know that we have moved to the mainland and had to set up house we were told that we couldnt claim the furniture, so that was why i was asking.

will probably try someone else next year.

because we have travelled our tax filing is too varied for us to try to do it ourselves. and next year we have the medical stuff going on, so we will still do it with a company.

you can claim all sales tax but obviously its only worth it on bigger items so all three years we've filed we claimed sales tax on our big purchases which has mainly been furniture.

this year she asked us about our medical and dental bills and without the proof let us claim for our sons dental treatment and some tests i had done last year, i don't remember doing that last year.

i imagine your taxes are quite complicated, ours are fairly simple i guess but i'm still too nervous to do them ourselves, i like the guarantee from h&r block that if your audited etc they'll help.

we have had to totally furnish another house and were categorically told that we couldnt claim for it so i will call them tomorrow and try to explain why i was claiming it.

sometimes i dont think that they know what they are doing themselves, i go to them to keep myself right, but think that we miss out on stuff that they dont claim for us.

its the sales tax you can claim as apposed to the actual furniture costs but it adds up if you've bought a lot of big items, i would call and ask about it too.

well my taxes are ready to be filed, sorted out the moving expenses which hadnt been claimed, she thought that we had moved less than 50 miles, so couldnt count it.

had to tell her that we had moved from st croix which is about three and a half thousand miles from here.

we have claimed all doctor's payments, medical miles, and prescription costs.

i'm glad its sorted its frightening how little knowledge some of these people have.
