uk nurses who have come to the usa

Published

I am in the usvi, and have been here nearly a year, maybe all the nurses who have posted their news about immigration, can now post about the differences in the us hospitals. I dont think that american doctors and nurses fully understand where we come from, and the working environment of the nhs, its only when we get here that we can understand the differences. I am sure that stateside hospitals are different even from here. and that they also vary from state to state, but maybe nurses who are waiting to come will be able to pick up some tips and know more than us what to expect.

christine....from wales to scotland to united states virgin islands, and then to the states, in january.

we got caught out with that one, hubbys tetorifice wasnt up to date and I didnt have diptheria titres, and as the vaccination was only available in tet/dip formula we both had to have them done. cost us about seventy pounds for the 2. my arm was painful and swollen, but hubby's wasnt bad. we had results of medicals within a couple of hours.

poor you!

The results of the HIV and syphilis wont be back til tuesday we should recieve the package by friday if all well.

At least the two only cost me £15

we had to have the HIV done by the GP. things change all the time. our medicals were done the same day as our embassy interviews in london.

keep copies of all your titres and results, you will need them at the end of your contract for your next employment over here, it will save you having them done again.

thats a good tip, did you have to pay for the titres? how much can they cost?

Get your GP to run a set of bloods costs nothing about the only thing that doesnt in the process lol

Make sure you include

measles

mumps

rubella

chickenpox

tetorifice

also get heaf test done as well

Children need hep b to be able to attend school so make sure all kids are innoculated or they start them at the medical. My little girl was done at my GP's. You need six months to get all completed.

dont forget the diptheria as well!

OGP give you a form for your doctor to fill the vaccination dates and titres in. if you have had the same GP for ever they will have a list from when you are a child. notes are supposed to be passed on even when you change doctors or move to another area.

right this is my plan of action-

got an appointment at gp next week, ask then if he can look at what immunisations we have all had, if not sure will ask for titres for us both and take it from there, i know hubby definatley needs tetorifice update so he will have to have that anyway

thanks for your help

I would just ask for bloods to be done full viral screen because they are more interested in the titres than if you had the injections done or not. You can loose immunity especially with rubella.:)

had an interesting conversation in work last night.

how do you describe disposable papier mache bedpans and urinals to nurses who look at you as if you have just come from the moon???????????

at first they thought that I was making it up, it was a shock to the system to realise that the americans dont have such a thing. they charge each patient for plastic bedpans, urinals, bowls etc, then they are thrown away after discharge.

and of course the nurses empty them, something that I hadnt done for a long time............I never thought that the forward thinking states wouldnt have disposable cardboard ones as everything else here is throw away.

please other brits already here....can you let us know if any hospitals over here have the system that we have in the nhs?

christine

Hospital I work in here has plastic bedpans as you described, but then the last place I worked in the UK had metal bedpans that got washed in a special machine too.Last place I saw that used papier mache anything was in Scotland.:)

how very strange, i really didnt think that it would be like that i just assumed that it would be the same as here and they would have the poo eating machine that we have. (this is how i describe it to my children they think its great!)
