UI Chicago GEP Spring 2012

Published

Anyone planning to apply to UIC's GEP for winter/spring 2012? (http://www.uic.edu/nursing/prospectivestudents/gep-about.shtml) The application opened on January 15 and is due March 1.

I just finished the primary application and am waiting to receive the secondary application to send out recommendation requests. Their application cycle is a bit odd and inconvenient, since most other places that start in the fall require deposits by late March into early April, and UIC doesn't inform you of your status until late April. But in the end, it's still a great program and worth a shot.

softenny,

I wouldn't give up hope yet. I would search last year's posting to see when the department you applied to began to notify those students of interviews. ACNP seems like it was right on the nose for offering interviews. I want you to know that I have been a crazy wreck since I submitted my application in the beginning of February. Today I was refreshing my email almost every five minutes. I was soooooooooooo distracted that I had a hard time concentrating on my work so I am the last person to say "have patience" but it seems that some of the departments are a little slower in replying than others.

I'm rooting for you!!!!

AniLMT,

I would love to give you stats to go off of but I don't think I am a "normal" student to judge off of since I have an a.a.s. in radiology and had a short health care work experience. I know that some people on here have posted in the beginning their stats and also on the 2011 cohort but I honestly think everything is based on an individual basis and how much you can show them you know about the nursing discipline you are applying to. I went to the information session and that it was very helpful- especially when three current students explained their histories and what they were experiencing. Good luck to you! I would suggest volunteer experience. I have about a year and half with the American Cancer Society and they also wrote me a letter of rec.

Hello all, I just joined and I have noticed people have already started to hear back from FNP track...if I haven't heard yet, is it safe to consider that I won't be getting an interview?:(

Hey all! Congrats on the interviews! UIC GEP FNP is my first choice (I live in Chicago) and I'll be applying for Spring 2013. Out of curiosity, if any of you have a minute to spare, could you post a summary of your application, so I know what they're looking for in a strong applicant? (If you know of somewhere else on the site where this is posted, please let me know!) Thanks!

AniLMT - I agree with misspriss. I don't think there is really a cookie cutter applicant or application (at least this what I understood from the info session I attended). I think it's a good idea to volunteer at a hospital before you apply (especially if you have no prior healthcare experience) as this will really help you to understand the role of nursing and more specifically, the advanced practice role. It also lets you know if going back to school for nursing is really what you want to do. Added bonus - if you like what you're doing then volunteering can become your favorite part of the week! UIC's College of Nursing has posted what they look for in applicants here:

http://www.uic.edu/nursing/forms/Admission_Tips_04-10.doc

and here:

http://www.uic.edu/nursing/forms/GEP_FAQ.pdf (one bullet on the second page addresses what you should consider when putting together your application)

Hope that helps - and good luck to you when you apply!!

Has anyone that applied for the Peds track heard anything back yet?

Good Luck to everyone!!

Hi everyone!

sjj6810- I applied for Peds and I heard back for an interview for April 6, 7, 13 on 3/21/11. Have you heard anything yet? Good Luck!

Hi everyone! Anyone out there applying for midwifery? My friend was notified on Tuesday for an interview (also for midwifery). Since I have not gotten anything my hopes are falling. What stings the most was that I applied last year and was called for an interview last year. So I must be up against better qualified applicants this year :( I've got a question for everyelse though, you know how you can check online on the 'status' of your application? What does yours say next to "Decision"? Mine says something like "Manual review required". I'm interested in seeing what everyone else has. Especially those who have gotten an interview...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed but I'm definitely looking at my plan B options. Sending everyone good vibes!

Thanks misspriss. I needed to hear that and I'm still waiting. Hopefully I hear something soon. Good luck on your interview.

chidoula,

my status says the same thing and I got an interview for PNP

For everyone who is worried about not hearing back yet I would say that there is still hope. I'm wondering if they are sending out interview notices to a few people and seeing what kind of response they get and then if people decline the interview or are unable to make it- maybe they will still offer more people who applied a chance at those spots.

Did anyone for ACNP hear about any interviews besides April 4th? I thought it was odd that they were doing one-on-one interviews for one day from 9-11am especially when I see other areas offering three different dates for interviews!

thanks softenny! my fingers are crossed for yoU!

I've been quiet because I've been losing hope, so I don't want to drag anyone else down. But congratulations to everyone who has received an interview invitation so far, and good luck!!! :)

I am on the same boat as you one phoenix rising. And thanks for the encouragement Misspriss1214

Phoenix - do not lose hope! If they are notifying by specialty, they may just not have sent out notices to the mental health NPs yet! I'm pulling for you!!
