UF accelerated BSN Summer 2019

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello!

It's only May but I am already working on getting my ducks in a row for the Post-bacc application. I thought it would be nice to start a thread so applicants can support each other through the process! I know I have a million questions already and I am trying hard not to pester admissions.

I am so excited to be almost done with my prerequisites and I am looking forward to finally applying this Fall!

I would love to hear about everyone's background, projects, questions, and hopefully we can help each other out.

Good luck to all! We got this!

How much do you think they take into account the essay answers/patient care experience? My GPA isn’t stellar but I was hoping my experience as a Scribe/MA/CNA would give me an edge. Do you know a lot of people from your cohort that already had clinical experience? Thanks!

Hi there! Sorry for my delay in response, I've had a busy couple of weeks! I know that the admission officers put a great deal of weight on the essays and personality assessment. Don't worry if your GPA isn't fantastic, that's only one piece of the puzzle! And remember that if you are rejected then it is in your best interest to appeal.

HI! I just want to thank you for all your helpful insight about the admissions process. I hope you're loving the program at UF! I just had a quick question - are there many out-of-state students? I'm starting to feel discouraged about being an out-of-state applicant as I've noticed from previous years most applicants stated they lived in Florida/went to UF previously. I made the move to Jacksonville after my bachelor's degree, but I went back to Illinois for my master's since the school I received my bachelor's from offered to pay for it (I couldn't pass that up) ?. Thank you again for all of your help!

Hey! I don't think that is necessarily a sign of admission or rejection, but we only have a handful of out-of-state students. To be honest, I don't think that there are many out-of-state applicants! To be even more honest, they want your tuition more than anyone else's (since it's significantly higher) so I would imagine that it helps much more than it hurts.

Do you happen to know how many assessments were sent out? Thanks for the info!!!

Unfortunately I have no idea how many assessment they send out, but we've been told that everyone that meets the basic qualifications gets one. So I guess it would depend on how many students applied and that number varies from year to year!

to clarify, if you attend community college, you get your ASN & then complete an RN-BSN bridge program. if you attend a university, and do either traditional or accelerated, you graduate with your BSN.

both ASN and BSN are considered RNs.

is that all correct??

Yep! With the ASN and BSN, you're eligible to take the NCLEX. If you pass, you become an RN. However, if you want to pursue a Master's to become a Nurse Practitioner later on, you need the BSN.

Does anyone know if we could get the results of our assessments? I am just curious to see what it says for my own personal knowledge.

I believe that you can review your assessment result with Kenneth Wynne after the admission decisions come out, but I am not positive. I know a few people who did not receive invitations to the program were able to view theirs with him. It never hurts to ask, whether you get in or not!

do photos like these make anyone else very nervous about applying for nursing school (especially accelerated programs)???

I am SUPER into academics and studying and getting my work done and all that. very Type A when it comes to school. but these types of things make me so nervous!! and so many current ABSN students that I have met at UF talk about how awful their lives are ?

please tell me i am not the only one who is nervous about not being able to handle an ABSN program!

Don't be fooled!! Nursing school is hard, yes, but it will not completely ruin your life. I mentioned earlier that my friends and I are able to go out, travel, and do all sorts of things that we never thought would be possible during the program. Of course, this all depends on the type of student that you are; we typically study for an exam beginning a week before. You'll be most overwhelmed the first semester but by the second one you'll feel like a pro and get your life back! Bottom line, do not worry!!

I think this form will be a great resource for those who get into whichever campus and are looking/needing a roommate(s)! My fingers are crossed for all. Try not to stress the "22nd".. especially because we may not even find out that day. Just remember, what's supposed to be will be. Xx

Does anyone know if we will be added to a facebook/contact form for those accepted prior to May?

Someone should make a Facebook group for those accepted! A lovely girl in our class volunteered to make one for us the night decisions came out, and we still use it daily! SO helpful.

I'm also an out-of state applicant but I have no idea what to do if I get accepted. I'm pretty sure the program will end up costing around $80.000 at least with living, insurance, etc. I don't have that much money ??

Scholarships!! UF offers a lot of them but you need to look for them, they won't just email you an invite to apply. A good amount of people in my program get them and don't pay a cent of tuition. There's a big need for nurses so there's a lot of organizations ready to help you become one!

hi everyone!

this is probably a very stupid question BUT i’m going to ask anyways!

other than being faster, what are the differences between accelerated programs and traditional programs?

thanks!!!

There is ZERO difference between the academics of the traditional and accelerated programs. The difference is all about timing; traditional students get the summers off and therefore have a 24 month program while accelerated students take classes during the summer and therefore only have a 14 month program. The summer semesters are also only 12 weeks so those semesters go by fast compared to the 16 week first and last semesters that the traditional students get!

Yes that is correct.

ASN and BSN can both become RNs once they pass the NCLEX. Most hospitals want BSN but will hire ASN and just require them to complete an RN to BSN program within a time frame.

Exactly! Hospitals all over the country have a new initiative that states all RNs will have BSNs by 2020, so job hunting with just an ASN is risky business right now. Yes, hospitals will pay for you to get your BSN but they'd rather just hire the BSN graduate in the first place. There's also a salary increase for those with bachelors as opposed to associates!

You provide so much insight - you have no idea how much I appreciate this. Do you know how early we should start applying to scholarships?

I’ve been a fly on the while reading through this page but might as well join in! Has anyone heard anything about us finding out sooner in February because of our assessment being due 15 days earlier?

Also, best of luck to everyone. I have tried and tried and tried again applying for nursing schools and have continued to get denied so i’m praying this is my lucky one. I hope for the same for you all!
