UCSF MEPN 2021

Published

Hi, I searched for a thread for the UCSF MEPN 2021 cohort, but did see any. I hope this help. I am looking to apply for the CNM/WHNP speciality. I wish everyone one of us all the best n our application.

Hello everyone! Sorry again, but I have another question. For additional background information, did you guys still make it personal like the goal/personal history statement or more factual? I don't know whether or not to go into extreme detail for certain experiences while throwing in opinions or to just simply list what I've done.

Lastly, just one more question! Did you guys submit a resume or a CV? I'm not sure which one would look better for applying!

Hi Everyone, have anyone been able to speak to anyone in admissions or have you received any replies from the MEPN coordinator , I am having some tech issues but have not received replies from admissions which is concerning

I have been trying to contact admissions for so long and I haven't gotten any reply! Has anyone been able to get through to Steven or anyone from UCSF?

I went into detail since they gave us a lot of characters to use. I used it as another opportunity for the reader to get to know me more.

Hi everyone!

I have had a lot of the same questions as everyone here. I wanted to let you guys know that I emailed nursing admissions support ([email protected]), and asked if -------------------- was still the correct point of contact. They said that he is, but has a "huge overload of emails." In any case, nursing admissions support may be able to help answer some questions if you email them. I'm still waiting for a reply though.

Best of luck to us during this application cycle! Sending good vibes to all of you during these crazy times.

Hey all,

I'm applying to PMHNP this year. Applied last year, got an interview, but did not get in.

I have emailed ------------------------- but have not had any success in connecting with him. Last year he was very responsive and timely in all of my email questions.

I am going through the Prerequisite courses and it asks for a Psychology course does anyone know what they are looking for?

Thanks

I had a similar question a few months back and ----------------------- responded right away. I had a class called "human behavior in the social environment" and sent him a description of it, which he approved. I think anything with "lifespan development" will also work. Psychology is so broad, I think most, if not all psychology courses should theoretically work.

I am also applying to the PMHNP program, assuming I can actually get the application together in time. I hope this year works out for you! What do you feel like helped you land an interview last year?

I see. When you interviewed was it a panel of directors ? What do you think could have prepared you more for the interview ? I’m a bit worried my GPA is only a 3.6 I know many are probably 4.0 range , trying not to stress out about it , I believe if it’s meant to be it will be I am so passionate about mental health

Lagranhermania,

Thanks for the Psych course info.

I applied for the AGCNS specialty last year without ever talking to one, in hindsight a mistake. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist transitioning into nursing. I have been working as a CNA for the last 4 years while I completed my prereq's and fell in love with nursing. I am working on a hospice unit at the VA.

I had my perception of what a CNS does from a conversation I had with the head of the CNS program. And based on that, I was set on becoming an AGCNS. However, when I was interviewed by two CNS's one from UCSF the other working out in the community, I do not think I gave them the answers they were looking for regarding where I wanted to be working in the health care system. I am still not sure what they were looking for. I really wasn't sure were a CNS works other than in a hospital or community clinic. I know they are out there but you never see them. Some work in research and clinical studies of health care. I wanted to specialize in hospice and run a hospice unit as well as train others on how to provide 5-star hospice care. But it was not to be.

In a conversation with one of my coworkers who is friends with a faculty member of the NP Program, I was told that I would have had a much better chance of getting in the PMHNP specialty with my background. So I decided to build on the foundation I already have in mental health and apply for PMHNP this year. I have decades of experience to draw from and provide excellent care.

Regarding making the cut from 550 to 160 for an interview and then only 80 are accepted into the program. Much depends on the 2nd and 3rd year staffing as to how many get into each specialty.

They said you have made quite an achievement by being here for an interview, you are a qualified UCSF candidate and should be proud.

I felt pretty good even though I did not get in. I am sure it was a crazy first year with the addition of COVID-19.

Back to making the cut for an interview,

I think I was effective in expressing in my Personal HX statement and my Goals statement, my passion for nursing, and caring for my patients. All of my varied life experience thus far has prepared me to be an excellent nurse. I found my prereq courses absolutely fascinating how all our body systems work so amazingly well and we do not even think about it. I said I want to go farther and deeper in my understanding of the complete biopsychosocial being that we are and provide excellent, competent, compassionate care to improve the lives of my patients.

Be true to your passion and express it!

Good luck

This is wonderful, thank you so much for your thorough response. I am a clinical social worker so my background is in therapy as well. When I emailed ------------------------- about which psych course he needed and told him what my master's was in, he pretty much said that they'd have no issue finding an acceptable course on my transcript. As an MFT, I imagine it'll be the same for you.

Best of luck to you!

Happy to be of assistance,

This is info further down the process but you might like to know.

They send out the acceptance or rejection letters via email mid-Dec and interviews are at the end of January. Interviews are over 2 days with am and pm sessions each day.

I got the impression of talking with other applicants that we all were interviewed by two individuals. one working at UCSF and one working out in the community and most of them were UCSF grads in each specialty.

Good luck!!

by chance, does anyone know the hard deadline for recommenders to submit their letters?

Hi, I can’t really say, but I ll make sure they submit it before the 1 st of September. I gave all my recommenders a deadline of August 15 and I made sure they got it in before that day.
