A place for individuals applying to the UCSF 2018 MEPN program to contact each other, share information, support each other, and provide advice.
Hi @TangoDeux, I too have wondered the same thing about the tapering off of these threads. I thought at first it was because the original threads were mostly people listing stats and trying to compare to one another. Now, I am not so sure. I do think there may be a slight decline in applicants but not too much. I still there the applicant pool is in the hundreds. Good question. Maybe someone will come up with a good way to pass the time during the waiting game--in a future thread.

Another reason I think is because the program has been around awhile now and people have been re-reading the previous threads so they don't really need to post as often to get new information that isn't already available. The previous cohorts have done a good job of finding out and posting the information about the program. So I think that is why over the years the need to post has fallen.
I also agree that the number of applicants might have fallen this year even though I don't have any empirical data to back it up right now. The applicant pool will still be in the hundreds as you mentioned before and continues to be a competitive program. My conclusions are based more on observation and what some people have told me when I talk to them. But I suspect and from talking to other posters, this year might just be an anomaly because they just implemented the 3 year stats rule so some people can't apply because their stats class validity has expired. Some people I've talked to will apply next year after retaking stats so i think UCSF might have a larger then normal applicant pool for 2019
Again, that is just a guess on my part so we will just have to wait and see.
Hey everyone,
I know I'm super late to the game but I wanted to say hi before we all hopefully get interview letters... I interviewed last year for the FNP specialty and was rejected so I'm hoping this is my year. A number of the people I spoke with on the interview day last January were not on all nurses so that may have something to do with the drop off in members/posters. I live about an hour north of SF, last year my interview letter was dated 11/30 and I received it the first week in December. So hopefully we will all get one in the next week or two?? There is nothing more nerve wracking than this waiting game, especially the second time around.

Hi @caitlynfb, welcome back to the boards! Thank you for the additional insight. Yeah, I did consider whether some of the applicants were just not on AN which would account for the low number of posters. Perhaps that is also case for this thread for 2018 based upon your interactions with the applicants last year. It is just nice to have a community to wait together with to help pass the time.
Since you and @rawallace have done this before, hopefully you can give us some suggestions or tips as we find out whether we got interviews and how we should prepare for it come January?
And a big thank you to the current MEPNs on this thread who are taking time out of their studies to give us their insights and help as well.
Hi everyone!
Good luck to you all as you begin hearing about invitations to interview. Thank you all for this thread and your posts! I am actually planning on applying next year for 2019 for the APHN specialty. I have been actively preparing for this for a while now as I work full time and have been only taking one pre-requisite per semester, so I am definitely getting close! The posts and advice have been super helpful in preparing me for what I should anticipate come summertime when the application opens and the waiting months after submitting. Your taking the time to share the experience is definitely appreciated !
So still haven't received anything in the mail yet, but let me tell you all how it went for during the last round of applications. I received a letter the first week in December telling me that they wanted me to interview, and it outlined exactly where and when to be there. The interviews were held on a Friday in the nursing building at UCSF. Each applicant is assigned to a time slot sometime during the day, and two NPs/Advanced Practice nurses conduct the interview. I was super nervous, in which case I was talking rapidly and telling stupid stories (in my opinion). I try to make up for being nervous by being extra outgoing, which doesn't always work in my favor. The interviewers and I had a good rapport and were talking for quite a while longer than some of the other applicants experienced (45min to other's 20-30min). Unfortunately my application was listed as rejected online. I emailed SJ about what I could do to make myself a better candidate and he said that there wasn't "just one thing" they could point to, that I was overall well liked and a good candidate for the program "just not this year". So that was that... I've been trying to think of what I could have done differently in the interviews and I have to say, probably go easy on the caffeine, try to relax and be yourself, and give honest and complete answers. Hopefully this is my year, but if not, I'll be back again next year! They won't get rid of me that easy! Hope this helps...

Hi!
I actually have no idea if the committee has met yet - sorry! If you send Steven Johnson an email, I'm sure he'll know the answer. He's super helpful :-)
Last year, my interview invite was printed on November 30th and got to me by December 6th (I lived in Seattle at the time). My interview was on January 27th.
I'm sure the letters will be sent out soon, so keep an eye on your mailboxes!
