UCLA new RN residency program 2010

Published

Hi,

I just wanted to start a thread for people applying to UCLA's new grad program this year. I have filled out the application online, but wondered if I should send a hard copy too. Does anyone else have any information? I heard that for the last new grad class, they had more than 800 applicants for 80 slots. Kind of discouraging...

@QRN22: haha i know exactly what you mean...I majorly debated today whether I should bring my phone with me into the gym! I decided against it today but from now on its coming with me :)

Congratulations and Good luck to all those who have moved onto the next step!! That's amazing :) I'm still waiting to hear anything at all as well! Trying to stay positive! For those who received a call already, did apply for the NICU, PICU, of Peds??

@Casey11...Congrats! If you don't mind, which unit/s are you interviewing for?

Med Surg/Neuro. Good luck everyone!

Hey Casey11! How was your interview? Mines next week!!

When the nurse recruiter called me she said ICU & ER were unavailable and asked me to pick my next choice.

What did you mean by ICU and ED not available....is this for everyone? Are they not doing New grads for these?

My interview is not scheduled until this coming Saturday. The nurse recruiter told me the same thing about ER (I didn't apply for ICU). What department did you request?

That makes no sense to me... why wouldt there be positions available in those areas? Why woukd they be options.. I'm just confused

Specializes in Emergency, Administration.

Regarding ER and ICU... Both hired a large handful of both new grads and experienced nurses last time around. As far as I know, ICU kept all but one new grad and ER kept all of theirs through orientation. It's bloody expensive to train new grads, especially in highly specialized areas such as ICU and ER — med surg/telemetry/geriatrics/peds/oncology were off of orientation months before ER and ICU. The application for you guys applying right now opened well before either ER or ICU were off of orientation from the August/September cohort. Chances are the directors and recruiters had no idea what their new grad need would or would not be come February.

That said, I have no idea if either are interviewing new grads at this time. I haven't heard anything one way or the other.

That suuuucks. ER was my first choice, second choice being Med-Surg/Step-Down.. I'm sure plenty of people listed Med-Surg as their first choice, so it doesn't look good for me.

Sigh -- that's horrible :( They should have informed us prior to submitting our applications -- it really isn't fair for the people who put their top 3 in ICU settings......only to find out much later (and after the talentplus interview) that they aren't hiring anyone in the ICU/ER settings... but anyways...thanks for the info. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

On that note, just to confirm what other people have been posting -- I, too, also called the recruitment office today and was told that we should be hearing something by the end of this week and was assured that not all calls have been made (as of today). She then told me if I don't hear anything by the end of the week, I should expect that they have already moved forward and that I wasn't selected..... they are expecting to send official emails to those who did not make it going forward by the end of the year. Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone else hoping & waiting to get phone calls...

To be honest I am unsure either, all she said was that these units (to be more specific my top two were Adult ICU & ER) were availablefor interviews. However I do not know about any other specialized ICU's such as NICU, MICU etc. Hence she asked me to pick another unit of interest. Sorry for the confusion...

i absolutely agree ! if they didn't plan on hiring for certain units, it would have been sensible (and considerate) to share that information with the applicants. i listed different icus in my top 3 choices... i obviously wouldn't have done that if i knew there was no place for me. my interest was not limited to the icu (i would enjoy tele and even medsurg as well!), but i did really enjoy my time in icu during school so that's the direction i went for the application.

well, i guess there isn't much anyone can do about it now. four more days, and then it's over--for better, or for worse.

good luck to everyone :)
