UCLA New Grad RN 2013

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello to all prospective UCLA Nurses!

My name is Matthew and I'm a CSU Long Beach alumnus.

I'm currently working as a Super User RN for the UCLA Health System.

I hope this thread will be able to answer our questions about the application, interview process and a place for any updates anyone receives for the 2013 new grad program.

With that said, I was told by recruitment that applications will be made available in March. :)

Got my email yesterday for an interview with the MICU unit director... I'm so nervous/excited!

Hello!

This is my first post in this thread and any info that anyone can provide will be very helpful

I will be graduating in may with a bachelors of science with a concentration in nursing from one of the top schools in New York. I recently found out that my family may be moving to California, which led me to begin to research nurse residency programs in the LA area. This program seems to be the best of the best.

Was wondering when applications should be in, what is required/what will help my chances of getting in. Also wondering what my chance of getting in will be and if it will hurt my chances being that I am from the east coast.

I am interested in working in the ICU but I loved my clinical rotation on a med/surg, tele floor as well so I am very flexible.

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Hello newgrad91!

The info from the HR website (UCLA Health System Careers) is that the next new grad program starting in September will be accepting apps June 10-16, 2013. Having a local LA address will be helpful when you apply if you don't live here yet (I would recommend using a friend or relative's address). I don't know about chances, it really depends on how many applicants there are and how many positions that each unit decides they have available. I can tell you that they did not have a new grad program this last winter because of their Epic implementation and the spring cohort is only open to the internal new grads that were short-term super users. What that means for your chances for this summer, I'm not sure. It may help to stay in contact with the lead nurse recruiter for the program. Her info is listed on the new grad residency page under UCLA nursing. Good Luck!

Has anyone interviewed yet?! If so, what unit? What kinds of questions were you asked?

Specializes in ICCU/ telemetry.

Is there are reason why it's better to put down an LA address? Is it b/c they don't want to pay relocation fees? or they like to hire in-state?

I was told that when I talked to a recruiter for the Super User position. I think they want to know you have a local address because it shows you are more likely to stay after the completion of the program as opposed to moving out just for the job and then moving back after a year or two. They want commitment :/

Has anyone interviewed for MICU? How was it? Have you heard back from the unit director yet?

I interviewed for 8 ICU (Transplant/Surgical ICU) today. The director was so nice. I feel that the interview went well, but I also know from speaking to the nurses on the floor that the manager is just a really nice person... Either way, I would love to work there! I like that she said she would give us a call next week whether we are chosen or not. At least we don't have to sit around wondering forever!

Anybody get a definite start date? I heard mid-late May...

thanks for your help NurseDippinDots!

Does anyone know if when applying you apply to a certain position or do you just apply to the residency program in general? Any positions easier to get than the others?

I interviewed with the director of the MICU on Tuesday. He was also incredibly nice and easy to talk to, and my interview couldn't have gone better! He let me know on the spot that he wanted me to come back for a second interview at the end of the month. I sent him a quick thank you email yesterday, and he responded immediately confirming that he would be in touch to let me know the details of the second (panel, yikes!) interview. I also was told that the start date would be somewhere at the end of May, and that different units may start at different days within a couple weeks of each other.

You apply to the residency program, then give your top 3 unit choices within the application. I have heard in the past that the CTICU is extremely competitive, but I don't know if that is actually the case.

Hmm, the director I interviewed with didn't mention a second panel interview. Ugh, hopefully she didn't hate me, lol! But the nurses that were hired onto the unit last year didn't mention a panel interview either. Is this something new? Or perhaps each unit has its own process? I really want this job, but luckily I am a care partner there and I will have another chance at interviewing if this round does not work out... Good luck to us all, we need it! So many applicants!!
