UCLA New Grad RN SUMMER 2011

Summer hopefuls talk here.... good luck to us all!!! :nurse: :redbeathe

Hi eeyorelove, I am a very honest person and I am always honest with myself. The way things are in California is sad and scary. The same thing happened when I was looking to apply to nursing school. I was very honest with myself and decided I rather attend school on the east coast then have to wait 1-2 years to get into nursing school. It looks like the same thing is happening in trying to fin d work in California. I would advice everyone having a hard time to try applying out of state.

This is what I did and I have 2 interviews schedule. I also will probably join either the Air Force or Navy after I gain some nursing experience. Always keep your options open and think about your long term goals. When the older nurses retire, babyboomers flood the health care system all of these hospitals will be begging and pleading for us to come work for them!!! I really commend a forum like allnurses for connecting all the new graduate rns. I often wonder if president Obama is aware about this situation.

The couple of people from my class who managed to find work all got hire through a friend. I even heard that this one girl in my class got a position as a case manager, I thought this position required years of experience but guess what she got hire by her friend.

Thanks for your input! I do have an open mind and really consider going into the Navy but even I hear it's getting hard to get in! CA is pretty tough even though more jobs are opening but then more ppl are graduating! I know so many ppl who are already or about to graduate very soon this year including myself and it is pretty scary! I feel desperate!!!!! Also, it is who you know that will get you hired!! (other than personality, exp, etc.) Well it will make us more special if you can get hired and did all the work yourself without anyone's help. So hard work will reward us better! (I hope! :D) That's just my thought.

wow I'm quite mad....I just got a rejection email from the PICU. They should reimburse me the $1000+ Dollars I spent to fly out there twice!

Aww I'm so sorry you didn't get the position, I was excited for you that you had a second interview and thought you'd get it! I also got a rejection email today from the PICU but it must be 100 times worse for you since you got farther in the process and lost a lot of money too :( I guess it just wasn't meant to be, you'll find something better!

Specializes in Telemetry.

OMG, I just remembered something, during the first interview with the UD she asked me several times: "have you applied to any other place". She mentioned this 3-4 times, then on my 2nd interview when I got a tour of the unit the lady asked me several times:"have you applied to any other places". This should have been a big clue that they were just wasting my time and already knew who they wanted to hire :eek:e. I feel really bad for the per that spent $1,000 when all along the UD knew who they want to hire.

ignore this one...

Thanks for your excitement and concern, I really appreciate it. I'm also sorry to hear you got rejected too and I hope you find something else that you can enjoy. I also hope I do find something better, but I just find it really ridiculous that they had me fly out again when they weren't 100% or pretty darn close to it. I spoke with the UD on the phone prior to booking the second trip out. I had to make arrangements to go on another day than everyone else because I was in the middle of finals and graduation was just a few days away. I also expressed concern about the financial part of it and wanted to know how many more steps there were in the process following this second interview. The fact that I talked to her on the phone about all that and she still had me come out makes me furious. I will not work for UCLA ever after this experience. I understand that they're a great system, but there's something to be said for being great and humble, which apparently this particular unit is not.

=/. sorry to hear about your rejection email. that sucks. (i guess i'm kinda waiting for mine too now... )

Well you still have hope since you didn't get rejected yet! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)

I know I should still have hope--but I'm now just waiting for that rejection email. It's frustrating that they already know who they want yet still have those who they know they don't want to give an offer to go through this agony :(

to all those getting rejection emails: stay strong.

I applied to 91 positions before getting hired at UCLA. I remember feeling depressed, angry, frustrated. All those things you mentioned: it's all about who you know, they only hire from the local area, everyone wants experience.

But, I don't know anyone at UCLA and I'm from out of area (SF), but in-state. I've gotten a couple other interview-requests that I've had to turn down now. So, my point is that YOU WILL GET A JOB. I know it's hard, but keep going, keep applying, and keep working on improving your resume (volunteer work, etc). I graduated in December, and I got the job offer in May, which I thought was incredibly quick. I was prepared to search for job for a year.

It's a tough market out there, but if you are an outstanding candidate, you will find work. It's just a matter of time!

Has anyone been able to get in contact with the UD of Acute Pediatrics and found out any info on when they would be notifying people?

just had my interview with the liver ICU UD. a littler nerve racking, but i think i did ok. i know i could've added more to my answers now that i think about it :smackingf

to anyone who interviewed for liver/surg ICU already, was it your first interview so far? are you just waiting to do a second interview, or for a job offer?

I did one person interview just like you on April 11th..we're still waiting for her call. Has she mentioned anything of when she's getting back to you? DO u know how many people she interviewed today? thanks
