Could you tell us a bit more about your work experience and background? I am an ADN RN and I was turned down. I am wondering what UCLA is looking for in ADN RN applicants.

Thanks!

If you're an ADN applicant, they're looking for experience. No ADN new grads. Silly Magnet... I don't know why they aren't just up front about what they REALLY want in new grad applicants, which is a BSN. Their loss, I know there's some great ADNs out there! (I'm an ADN =D)

I have 5 years of experience but not all in acute care. Maybe they are looking specifically for ADN RNs with a lot of acute care experience to "make up" for the lack of BSN.

To UCLA's credit, they did say BSN strongly preferred. A few UCLA residency threads from the past couple of years said that some ADNs got hired but no specifics about their experience and credentials.

Well, if you have experience, you're not eligible for their "new grad" program. As far as I can tell from talking to friends who work at UCLA, it's just been the last couple of years that they REALLY don't take new grad ADNs. I do have a friend who's ADN who had a lot of clinic experience, a good bit in managerial positions, and he just got into UCLA's OR training program, but he had a lot of connections and quite a few years of management experience.

And as far as "making up" for lack of BSN, what really matters is the percentage of RNs in the facility that are BSNs, because of Magnet. I have a hunch that trend isn't only going to continue, but grow.

I agree 100%! I'm an ADN too and its getting really frustrating. Now, I cant blame UCLA if they dont want to hire ADNs or only hire a few. Thats their choice. It sucks! Theres not a lot of new grad jobs out there. BSNs gets priority then whats left (if theres any) is given to ADNs.

I'm curious to know if the people who have "not selected" or "alternate applicant

" on their status applied before October 5th? Mine has not changed but I applied on the 5th so I'm guessing they have not reviewed my application yet??

I read that applicants must have less than 6-12 months (I dont remember) of RN experience. My 5 years experience is a LVN, not a RN.

Thanks for the insights! More motivation to keep at it at school and get a BSN.

I have alternate candidate selected. I applied on October 8th.

do you have any experience in healthcare as an RN, volunteer, or any previous healthcare job?

Ahhh, that's different then =). Yeah, I think at this point getting a BSN is always a good idea. I'm in an MSN program (I have a B.S. in another field) and I noticed that as soon as I added the program to my resume, I started getting a LOT more calls for interviews. Just showing that you're in the process of advancing your education helps, methinks.

I submitted my app on the 3rd and got "Alternate Applicant Selected"... I'm an ADN but I have previous experience managing a Dr's office, working as a CNA (well, technically student nurse position, but same thing) in a hospital, and volunteer experience. I've been told by recruiters it really comes down to the degree... sad.

I'm still in school but have been working in the field of substance abuse detox for the past 5 years. In terms of hospital experience, I have none. I do however volunteer in the community and am working on starting my own nonprofit. Hope that helps! Where did you go to school? I'm pretty sure UCLA will consider ADN's who have rotated through their hospital. They hired 2 ADN students from my school last semester.

Hi,

5 years as a LVN, no experience as a RN. I volunteer with Remote Area Medical and took on a lot of positions and projects in my campus nursing clubs.

Thanks for all your help! Your school must have a good reputation with UCLA and your community work is definitely an asset. My school is in the very east of LA County and is not prestigious by any means hehe. Good luck!! Keep us posted!
