UCLA MECN 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey, I am currently getting ready to apply to the UCLA MECN program. I went to UCLA yesterday to meet with the nursing advisor and since I have 2 C's, one in psych and one in Stats, she advised me to repeat one of them because I can't have more than one C on my transcripts. I plan on taking Micro this fall. In terms of work experience, I work with an agency facilitating care for end of life patients. I really want to get into the UCLA program but I will also be applying to CSULA, CSUN, CSUCI, CSUSM and USF, Western and

Anyway, I just wanted to create a thread for those applying same time as I so we can discuss. Fyi I will be attending the info session on July 26!

I really want to specialize though so I'm kind of bummed that the MECN doesn't offer a specialty, I would have to do a post-masters program.

How many classes can you have in progress when applying?

If a class is repeated, do they average the two or disregard the lower grade totally?

How much is the program in total?

Do MECN graduates make more in terms of salary than BSNs?

Does anyone know when the last day to submit LOR is? Thanks and goodluck everyone!

Recommenders have until January 15th to submit the form

Hi everyone,

I am also applying to UCLA for fall 2017! I had a question regarding the application, are there any documents required for the supporting documents section? I cannot find anything on the instructions about this and do not want to both Rhonda again if I don't need to.

Thanks and good luck!

Hey everyone > just started the program here a little over a month ago. If you came to an info session, that's pretty much your home for the next couple of years once you're in. That auditorium is where all the classes are taught and skills are taught in separate areas!

I didn't poll other's grades, but it seems to be a wide range including experiences. I know for health care experience they do prefer experience with direct patient care (in one facet or another) but again, there are plenty of others that have not had any direct exposure to patient care and seem to be moving along just fine!

When people mention SOP as being crucial, it's pretty important. GPA is as well obviously for the MECN program but like I said, I think there is a wide spread (like 3.3-4.0) and would probably weighted by SOP/LORs!

Hope to see you all next year!

edit: forgot to address some of the opening questions: I'm unsure about long term salary, but as far as entry, it's an RN position. As far as specialties this program specializes in CNL (clinical nurse leaders), if you mean like advanced practice, one of the program directors is a firm believer in having sufficient experience prior to becoming an NP; she has said a few times "how can you expect to diagnose if you haven't even seen it in practice." Their NP program is quite serious, I think it was one of the first nationwide and definitely the first on the west coast I believe? Anyway, I'm hoping I addressed a few of your questions!

Thank you for taking the time to write to us!!

Hi Everyone!

I just recently moved to California so I am late to the game in applying to nursing programs in the area. Last week I came across UCLA's MECN program and decided to apply. I haven't been able to attend an information session so I have a few questions I am hoping you guys can answer. I have very few days left to get this application together!

It seems like the SOP is very important. What size font did you all use? I am finding it challenging to include everything within the three page double spaced requirement.

Thanks!

Allie

Hi Allie,

I just submitted mine today. 12pt font and double spaced. I know its difficult but I'm sure you'll be able to do it!

Goodluck!

Thank you! I think you did the right thing, that's the standard font size. Did you use times new roman?

Hi everyone,

I just sent in my application today and was wondering if my stats are ideal for an accepted applicant. If anyone who was previously accepted with similar stats could provide some feedback that'd be great.

- Graduating Dec 2016: BS Public Health

- Undergrad GPA (after Dec): ~3.4-3.5

- All Pre Reqs completed: Yes

- Pre Req GPA: 3.5 (1 "C" for pre reqs)

- Work Experience (EMT - 2 companies (BLS & First Responder): 1800+ hours

- Lead/Supervisor EMT Experience

- Strong SOP / LOR

- Hospital internship as CCE: 300+ hours

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
