UCLA MECN 2017

Published

Hey, I am currently getting ready to apply to the UCLA MECN program. I went to UCLA yesterday to meet with the nursing advisor and since I have 2 C's, one in psych and one in Stats, she advised me to repeat one of them because I can't have more than one C on my transcripts. I plan on taking Micro this fall. In terms of work experience, I work with an agency facilitating care for end of life patients. I really want to get into the UCLA program but I will also be applying to CSULA, CSUN, CSUCI, CSUSM and USF, Western and

Anyway, I just wanted to create a thread for those applying same time as I so we can discuss. Fyi I will be attending the info session on July 26!

I really want to specialize though so I'm kind of bummed that the MECN doesn't offer a specialty, I would have to do a post-masters program.

How many classes can you have in progress when applying?

If a class is repeated, do they average the two or disregard the lower grade totally?

How much is the program in total?

Do MECN graduates make more in terms of salary than BSNs?

STAFF UPDATE

Tell us about UCLA by visiting University of California (UCLA) School of Nursing | Peer Reviews.

There are 24 of us in the fb group so far.

Ok - so it seems like the first wave went out almost 2 weeks ago. Has anyone else received responses?

I'm considering applying to National for a BSN in my next round. The NCLEX rate is actually pretty great!

@kellisabellis I wonder if there's a ton of us out there who have not received acceptance, waitlist, or rejection. I've received nothing. When they confirmed that my application was complete, they said wait till the "end" of March...

I don't understand the "waves" thing. Do they do 25 acceptances and 20 waitlists, then do the second half two weeks later? It's very confusing. Do you guys have any ideas about what the "waves" of acceptance are?

Praying for all of us! :nailbiting:

There's really no rhyme or reason to their notification method. I think most people have found patterns by reading previous threads. But as to knowing the notification "wave" I don't thinks there's a true answer.

Thanks for the reply guys! Sorry we're on this drifting raft together but glad I'm not alone.

The idea that people have been notified that they hold place 16 or 39 on the waitlist makes me think that the waitlist and acceptances have already been decided.

So, I see not having heard anything as meaning one of three things:

1-SON has already decided who has been outright accepted. We've been accepted but they are staggering out acceptances - probably giving the most competitive candidates letters first, and letting waitlisted candidates know they have been waitlisted to keep them on the hook in case enrollment dips before school starts. It buys them some time...

2-We are so far on the waitlist that the only way we will be notified that we have been waitlisted if others before us decline their waitlisted spots. Then we will be notified of our places on the list. The back-up waitlist, I suppose. And if not enough people fall off the waitlist then it's a rejection.

3-SON has been trying to reach us extensively but our spam blockers are just SO HARDCORE that it's to no avail, they will show up on our doorstep with flowers and chocolates crying "Finally, I've found you."

Whichever the case, we didn't get notice of rejections. And while I'm growing disheartened, and the "chin up kids" from everyone else just doesn't quite help, I'm glad I'm not the only one wading in the muck! I also haven't heard from CSULA or CSULB which makes me feel like a strongly mediocre candidate all around.

I'm thinking of taking a CNA class at the local CC over Summer if it's offered so I can get more hospital experience. Someone suggested going to National University, and price wise it doesn't seem much different than UCLA (don't know how FAFSA works with that if at all though), and the NCLEX pass rate is 96% (don't know if that's just for LA or SD and LA). It is only a BSN, though. But at this point I'm like someone take my money.

How are you dealing?

@kellisabellis

I love you. LOL

I just think it's so strange to have all the acceptances and the waitlisted people determined and delay sending rejection letters to everyone else. Why keep people on hold if there is no chance? It doesn't make sense to me.

I am opening my mailbox every day like there is a snake in it. :cheeky:

I know a person that went to National for their BSN then went to CSULA for their NP and their doing well.

Good to know! Thanks for your insight!

Has anyone on waitlist receive an acceptance/rejection or even any updated information on their ranking?

i'm #17 and I haven't heard anything. Although I registered for the epidemiology class, I can't keep waiting for ucla to call me. I might go to USD since I was accepted there. It's just the cost difference that is bothering me.

From last years forum, it seems that people who were higher on the waitlist heard back around this time if not earlier. Also, it seems that those who were #16-25 usually heard back May and all the way till August..

How much is the tuition at USD?

It seems that some applicants on this thread haven't receive any information regarding their status, so maybe they are still sending out acceptances/rejections. Good luck to everyone that is still waiting!
