UCLA MECN 2017

Published

Hey, I am currently getting ready to apply to the UCLA MECN program. I went to UCLA yesterday to meet with the nursing advisor and since I have 2 C's, one in psych and one in Stats, she advised me to repeat one of them because I can't have more than one C on my transcripts. I plan on taking Micro this fall. In terms of work experience, I work with an agency facilitating care for end of life patients. I really want to get into the UCLA program but I will also be applying to CSULA, CSUN, CSUCI, CSUSM and USF, Western and

Anyway, I just wanted to create a thread for those applying same time as I so we can discuss. Fyi I will be attending the info session on July 26!

I really want to specialize though so I'm kind of bummed that the MECN doesn't offer a specialty, I would have to do a post-masters program.

How many classes can you have in progress when applying?

If a class is repeated, do they average the two or disregard the lower grade totally?

How much is the program in total?

Do MECN graduates make more in terms of salary than BSNs?

This is my first time applying. But do you have any tips for me if I don't get in this year? What did you do to fill the time between application cycles? I was going to work as a CNA and start self study using nursing school text books. Thanks Amzy

my dear, I just continued taking more classes at a community college, to complete other schools' requirement. I also gained more volunteer hours, although it isn't a requirement. We hope we all get in this time. It's usually a tough school to get into.

Amzytubies - mind sharing any of your stats from last year? if you're comfortable :)

Didn't actually have a promising stat as I was completing most of my prereq when I applied.

Bachelors: 3.54

My completed prereq at the time: 3.85

Just got started on my volunteer work

Had a statement of purpose that was not so great according to UCLA. They said it lacked leadership qualities.

As at then, I had 5 outstanding prerequisites, including epidemiology. Now I have completed all, except epidemiology, so I pray I'm considered.

I will have completed all prereqs including epi by Jan 15, but I have very little volunteer work. I have a 3.9 pre-req GPA but a pretty abysmal undergrad (tough, competitive major). I have one graduate degree already in non-allied health. I'm feeling optimistic, though, because I'm hoping they like to have an eclectic motley crew of students. If I don't get accepted, I'll eat donuts for a week but then start pre-reqs to apply to CSULA, I think.

Dose application required for Volunteer hour?

If so do we need to submit verification of Volunteer hour?

I don't think any volunteer hours were required. They're only beneficial (same with paid healthcare experience). Also pretty sure we didn't need to submit any verification - the only thing I knew of was that on our resume we needed to list the dates and average hours we contributed to each volunteer activity.

Thank you sweetpotates :)

My classmate met with the admissions folks, asked about the volunteer experience (because he hadn't started any yet), and his take away message was the volunteering is table stakes -- everyone ought to have it so you can demonstrate you've done some research into the profession and know what you're getting into.

Please, can someone give me advice on how to lengthen a personal statement because I've found out on UCLA's website that its length should be 2-3 typewritten pages, double spaced, and my is only 1,5 pages long. Samples I usually find (for nursing school and other schools) are not that long.

I will be very grateful!

Did you include all the criteria they list on the website? I had difficulty making it less than 4 pages when I wrote about all the things they wanted included in the sop

Keep in mind a lot of information is on your resume! You do not need to repeat the facts of your resume. It is a time to mention information and details not previously mentioned in your application! There is no limit on the length of resume so I put a lot of information in there

If we had changes to our Resume, are we able to resubmit it before Jan 15th? If so, does anyone know how?
