UCLA MECN 2016

Published

Hey there, I am planning on applying to the UCLA MECN 2016 program and was wondering if anyone else out there was applying as well. Just curious about other applicants and hoping to go through this application process with some other people! Would love any feedback. Thanks :)

Isn't graduate housing pricy? Cheapest monthly rate is $1200... does that mean we have our own room? Or is that the price for the entire apartment? I wonder if it's furnished.

Right now I live in Westwood with my roommates and I'm planning to stay here because it's only $600/month. Compared to graduate housing...

let me know, I'm a little confuse.

Also weyburn and hilgard are furnished if i'm not mistaken but all of the other graduate housing options are not. And I think I covered in the previous message but just to be sure my understanding is that all grad options allow you to have your own room.

Ohhhh, I see. Thank you so much for this!

I think I am leaning to staying in my current apartment since I have everything here already. I would just need to move a few things around, buy a couple more drawers and get a bookshelf :)

I am a little crammed with 4 roommates (5 of us in a 2 bedroom), but hopefully it works out great :D

I'm excited for Fall!

It's nice that you already have housing arrangements figured out, that's always a good feeling! I on the other hand will be patiently waiting and praying that I get a good spot through grad housing. The timeline provides enough flexibility to look elsewhere should I not be granted a spot.

Also super excited for fall!!

Yeah, having your own room is nice but so is having the extra money. I kind of feel like all I ever do is study and sleep anyway, maybe hit the rock gym or go for a run when I have any downtime. I think I am in the middle of your guys' situations. In an earlier post I said that I paid $750 (my share for a 1 bedroom) but I feel that it works out pretty well. I study late so most of the time I just sleep in the living room so it never feel like we get in each other's way. It actually seems like graduate housing is more than just a regular apartment!

@ FocusedonBecoming, I lived in Santa Monica in a two bedroom (pretty big) for $1925 a month, 2 bedroom 1 bathroom for my first two years at UCLA. Just paid $30 for the Bruin Bus pass each quarter and took the bus to campus. It came with a 1 car garage and me and my other roommate switched on and off and parking on the street wasn't a problem. If you want more info, just let me know.

^^ Nevermind! I was thinking of Hilgard prices. Sorry about that!

No need to nevermind your message, def good info! Although the options i'm interested in are a better deal it is still very helpful to know especially about the santa monica info you shared. that rate is comparable to what I pay now for a 2/2 in Pasadena but I never thought you could get anything in that range on the Westside. Like I said there is def no guarantee that I will be granted a spot through one of UCLA's more affordable options or any option for that matter so I will be sure to keep you as a reference. Thanks!!!

Yeah, well you shouldn't worry. There are A LOT of housing opportunities in Westwood, I even have a spot available for next year if anyone is interested, but then that is 6 of us in a 2 bedroom, but on the plus side rent is cheap :D

You'll find something :)

Hi, I will be coming from Sacramento and have never lived in southern cali. I am not too familiar with UCLA campus either. I would love to find cheap housing closer to campus. I have requested grad housing but from the description of it I highly doubt I will get it. If any of you know anything cheap, close please do let me know. Would be pretty awesome to live with some fellow nursing students. I study a lot so I don't really care that much where I sleep. Anything pretty much works for me. I am thinking about coming down there to visit the campus and surrounding areas.. Any advise, any information would be greatly and deeply appreciated. Again congratulations to all the fellow MECN 2018 candidates. :)

If anyone ever comes down to visit, let me know :) I've been at UCLA for +4 years so I know everything pretty well and I give tours of campus so I can give a mini tour to a fellow MECN :)

also, i've lived in apartments for almost 3 years so I know a little bit about Westwood living :)

Thats awesome!! Yeah I will let you know but I definitely will be coming down there way before orientation day just to get sort of a good feel of the area. Is the school of nursing close to the main campus? How far is the 24 hr library from school of nursing? Library will be my second home lolz. Right now its the gym but I am pretty sure gym days will be replaced by library days. Also, is the campus super spaced out or pretty much clustered. I went to Berkeley and our campus was pretty much clustered you can say..

@CalBear916 The school of nursing is just south of center campus. Everything is together in one big "weird looking" triangle so all UCLA is together but pretty much the school of nursing is on the south end with along with the school of med/dentistry and public health. The entire med area has it's own library/ cafeteria/ UCLA store/ etc. It's nice too because it's right across the botanical gardens for a mini getaway. I think the 24 hour library you are referring to is the main library: Powell, which features night powell. That is around a 10-minute or less walk from the school of nursing going north (since we are south remember). The med library also has a 24 hour med graduate study area (only med students/dentist/nursing/public health graduate students are allowed).

Just like UC Berkeley, things here are a bit spread out as well with South side mainly focusing on the science departments, and north side with humanities/ social sciences/ arts/ law/ film, etc.

My best friend went to UC Berkeley so I'm familiar with their spacing as well :) But UCLA is much much smaller, so you can imagine the spreading is a bit tighter, but it does take a good 15-20 minutes to get from the far south side of campus to the north. (Le Conte Ave to North Hilgard)

Thank you! Of course the most important question of all, is the campus gym pretty close by? I do wanna make sure I get about 45 mins a day but we shall see. I have tons of friends in various RN programs and the sheer amount of reading is scary. I am gonna miss the good old undergrad days. lolz. Plus i am also spoiled by the semester system. Its gonna require some adjustment to the fast paced quarter system. I am super glad to hear UCLA is smaller and closely knit!! I actually felt Berkeley was pretty much close knit. You wrote LeConte, it reminded of LeConte hall at Cal and that was on the north side :)
