Hey there, I am planning on applying to the UCLA MECN 2016 program and was wondering if anyone else out there was applying as well. Just curious about other applicants and hoping to go through this application process with some other people! Would love any feedback. Thanks :)
@Ms berry
Congrats on your acceptances!!! Though I would love to tell you to pick Arizona so you can open up a spot for those on the waitlist...lol... truth is, you have to pick what's best for you regarding travel, moving and budget wise. Yes UCLA is a great school but, depending on what you're trying to do with your Master's degree in nursing only you can make such a decision. This is your career choice and it's going to cost either way but, the real decision should narrow down to if whether or not you want to be able to provide patient care on a more advanced level. An NP can do just as much as an MD without the title where as a clinical nurse cannot! You can open your own private office as an NP but with an MSN you have to work under a physician. I've also done my research and either way you can't lose. Of course it depends on your ultimate goal and how far you want to take your degree. But I'm sure you'll make the right choice either way. 90,000 is alot of money but your also getting a more advanced degree that holds more weight. Hope this helps!
I need some advice and made a separate thread for this but didn't get any responses, so I'm hoping to get some help from you guys here. I got into both UCLA's MECN and APU's ELM programs and need some help deciding.APU
-RN, BSN & MSN-NP or MSN-CNS
-3-4 years (depending on track)
-$90,000+ tuition
UCLA
-RN & MSN-CNL
-2 years
-$50,000+ tuition
I was unclear about APU's advanced practice MSN vs UCLA's generalist MSN, but I did some research and found out that NPs have some prescriptive authority and provide more direct patient care, whereas CNLs have more of a managerial role coordinating care. UCLA's hospital network and reputation are obvious draws, but I'm wondering what can be said about the CNL certification vs the NP/CNS licensure. Do you guys know what the job prospects are between those types of nurses? Do you plan on getting NP certification after the MECN program? APU's program looks very appealing but attending UCLA does too, so help please!
I'm not sure I understand how the other program works. It's an entry-level program where you continue on to get your specialty afterwords? I know both Yale and UPenn have this but I missed the deadline to apply. I love the idea, you're guaranteed a spot and don't have to deal with the competition again. However, Upenn's program for the 1st year is 100K and a little less the second year, but then you have up to 5 years to complete the specialty program (such as NP) or you can go straight into it. Is it something like this?
You really have to do what is best for you. There are so many components to take into consideration (time, money, name, length of program.. everyone values these things differently). Personally for me, I want to go to the next step as quickly as possible. I applied to JHU and Columbia for their direct entry level program, but I can't see myself paying that much for tuition unless it was the CRNA program or the joint program as I just described (I still applied because when I met them they said their financial aid packages were very good). But if it was one of those combined programs I'd do it in a heartbeat. You just have to figure out what is most important to you. It's a tough decision, UCLA is a great school. As much as I hate living in LA, my experience here has been wonderful.
In any case, it's a great place to be in so whatever you decide is going to be amazing! Good luck with your decision!!
@msberry .. dont stress too much about it... I applied also to several nursing programs... and i told to myself... whichever comes first... that would be my path... because I don't want to stress about which one should I pick.... after all .... we all want that initial RN right? .. just follow your heart and think about your future and growth in healthcare business..
