Hi Everyone!
I've been searching for a thread for applicants to UBC's BScN program for September 2017, but I haven't found one. Please feel free to point me in the direction of an existing thread, or add to this one! I'm applying to UBC, U of T, and UWO for September, but UBC is definitely my first choice. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!
:)
Hi Everyone!
I just completed my CASPer test. I don't feel good about how I did. In fact I think performed pretty terrible. Right after the exam I just felt absolutely drained.
There were moments during the test I felt like the proverbial deer caught in headlights. I think I'd prefer an in person interview, possibly an mmi, even if I'd have to pay to fly out to BC from Toronto.
I did take the time to give altus assessments my feedback though. In the hope they can improve the experience for future test takers - most likely I'll be one of them. I guess I'll chalk it up to experience and hope I can perform better next time.
hi hopingforthebest,
Yeah I can relate. I was also interviewed by UBC last year and fubared it (excuse my expression). Its funny how nerves effect people differently sometimes in unexpected ways. During the interview I spoke so fast with the vocabulary of a kid...THAT in itself was interesting to experience...it's never happened to me before and hopefully never will again.
But now that I've gone through both online interview and CASPer experiences, I think I'd prefer an in-person interview. Even with the additional cost to fly there and back, UBC would be worth it.
Hello future nurses! I am a first time applicant and am a little nervous after reading all the replies about amazing backgrounds people have in healthcare settings. Are there more people willing to share their backgrounds that were not mainly in healthcare settings?
hi nursingbc21,
Yup, I graduated uni with a liberal arts degree and worked some years in design. Seemingly very different from Nursing lol. My connection to healthcare began when I started helping care for a very ill family member. A few years ago I've began volunteering at several hospitals here; basically learning as much as I can about Nursing and how hospitals and the HC system functions. I've done a few different things as a volunteer from mundane tasks like pulling & filing patient folders, bringing newspapers to patients to more interesting things like shadowing Nurses, transporting patients in wheelchairs, helping therapists with non-essential tasks and volunteering in the PACU at an acute care hospital. Don't worry you're the only non-sciencey, non-healthcare applicant! There are a few of us. I think. LOL!
Hey all,
Just finished the CASPer test today. I think I did pretty well, but it's difficult not knowing.
I am a first time applicant to UBC Nursing. I have very little experience in healthcare and I am hoping UBC was serious when they told me that they are looking for well-rounded, mature individuals with life experience! I have a degree in Criminology, was an NCAA gymnast, lived in Japan for a year and have spent the last 10 years coaching gymnastics. I have a pretty good GPA, but am lacking a lot in the volunteer experience section on the supplemental application. I am currently taking A&P through Athabasca online.
I guess we have done as much as we can do through the application process and now it is just time to wait and see! Good luck to everyone who applied!
Aly
Hey Aly,
I heard UBC nursing really does like rounded individuals and it sounds like you have lots of life experience! If things don't work out this year (fingers crossed they do) I'd suggest working for a company like Community living society or possAbilities even as a relief (you can pick up shifts on call). I think that'll really strengthen your application as the job essentially requires you to be a care-aid (you're called a counselor though because they'd require you to have a diploma if they call you a care aid). The jobs basically require you to do personal care, administer medication, etc. A lot my friends are doing it, and I've done it myself for a number of companies over the years.
I hope things go well for you! Good luck!
It was hard to say everything I wanted to and organize my answers in such a short time frame.
Yup, you nailed it. I understand they're trying to get us to shoot from the hip & why. I'm not sure that'll lead to an accurate measure of characteristics though; kinda felt artificial to me. IRL reactions & responses just happen organically. I've been replaying some of the questions in my head & *cringe* at what I missed/ how I answered.
Hi there everyone :) I'm not applying UBC nursing's program for September 2017, but I'm from Vancouver island and am applying to the Camosun/UVic's Nursing program for this fall. We are the first group of applicants to have the CASPer test as part of our application process, and since we are the first group I am unable to get in contact with anyone from Camosun/Uvic's program about this test. I have heard that UBC's nursing program is more familiar with this process so I was wondering if I'd be able to talk to someone from this thread that has gone through this process for some better insight. My CASPer test is coming up really soon so it any help or advice I get would be amazing!!
I'm happy to PM you in any way, just give me a shout of the best way to contact you.
Thanks in advance for your help!! :) I really appreciate it!
