UBC BSN September 2017

Published

Hi Everyone!

I've been searching for a thread for applicants to UBC's BScN program for September 2017, but I haven't found one. Please feel free to point me in the direction of an existing thread, or add to this one! I'm applying to UBC, U of T, and UWO for September, but UBC is definitely my first choice. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Yeah res will definitely do that for you! With my experience with res at other schools I just found it to be a rip off :(

@wonkknow, when I lived in Van a while back, if you go to smaller grocers (commercial dr) and buy there, it was fine to make it by about 60-70$ a week! Might be a bit now but depends where you go!

@wonkknow there is definitely cheap eats a plenty. I do cook myself. We have a deep freeze so I try to buy enough groceries and make food enough for two weeks. I generally budget for 200$ a month for food but I am always below that. I generally spend about 150$. I make soups stews, freezer burritos tacquitos etc just to give you an idea and then I portion it out and freeze it. I set a side one day every two weeks to and commit to one or two items that will last.

I am applying with a 3.4 GPA and I feel/felt fairly strong about my supplemental -not many volunteer jobs but 1 very strong and I am a board member at the same institution. I also felt very good about my casper. All that said I am not confident at all haha...definitely expecting rejection and losing hope on finding out before my surgery. I JUST WANT IN!!! hahaha I'm sure you all feel the same way :)

I seem to be the opposite of all of you! My GPA is 4.0 however I'm probably one of the youngest applicants so my volunteer experience is limited (1 yr at a children's hospital) so that definitely worries me. But Ive always heard people of all backgrounds get accepted so I wouldnt worry too much until we know for sure.

Thanks for the info! That'll give me a start where to look. I'm going to have to start exploring. Wish I could afford a trip to Vancouver just to explore where locals shop and eat!

Woah! You're organized! If I got a fully furnished apartment, that'd be the way to go for sure! Also thanks for the numbers, that sounds reasonable for a family. Hopefully dividing your numbers by 2 is a close enough estimate of the cost for 1 person.

Not only that, but in the previous university I attended, there are time restrictions! They stop serving dinner at 8pm or 9pm! I'm just thinking to myself what if I come back late from a placement and they close the cafeteria? LOL.

Despite all that, considering the time to cook and clean all by myself, I think I'll still to have prioritize convenience over finances.

BUT, as Daisy2016 says, there are cheap eats! So maybe I'll just do that instead of a meal plan - risk some weight gain. LOL.

Hi @wonkknow - have a look on craigslist there TONS or furnished places for 500-700 a month :)

Yes when we find out who is accepted we can maybe share our emails and send each other a roommate resume with our personality, background and living style and see if we can find a place together. I am planning on renting a room (I am from Victoria) just to get over there and then, if it is less than desirable it will be easier for me to network and find another place. The transit in Vancouver is amazing so as long as you are close to a skytrain it's easy to get around. All skytrains end downtown and thats where you get the bus to UBC. I figure even if I have a commute I can use that time to get readings done. Trying to take one thing at a time though, it's so hard not to to think 1000 steps ahead but first thing is getting accepted!

Wow that sounds like a sweet setup! If you don't mind me asking, do you cook or eat out mostly? Whats the cost of food over there?

I think stupidstore (superstore) has the best prices when it comes to most food. Check out Welcome to Superstore and set your store to one of the Vancouver ones. You can search food you eat on there and get an idea on prices.

Hey guys,

Living on Rez is not worth in my opinion. The whole Dunbar area actually is super overpriced. Commuting sucks but it does save you a ton of money and considering you're only in UBC a few times a week it's worth doing in my opinion. Also wholefoods has like 5 chicken breasts for $12 and Langley farm market is super cheap for veggies and stuff!

Side note: I've decided on going to BCIT. My pros/cons listed indicated it's the better decision for me. But I'm still hanging around here to see if I get in. I have 3 years experience working as a support worker and I applied with 88% in my last 30 credits. Not gonna lie doe, a part of me cannot wait to reject the UBC ******* hehe (after 5 years there I'm a little jaded :p)

So good luck to all! I'm sure you guys will all get in! I'm rooting for everyone!
