UBC BSN September 2017

Published

Hi Everyone!

I've been searching for a thread for applicants to UBC's BScN program for September 2017, but I haven't found one. Please feel free to point me in the direction of an existing thread, or add to this one! I'm applying to UBC, U of T, and UWO for September, but UBC is definitely my first choice. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

:)

@mdana93, you learn the most on the job so if anything we will catch up quick! I'm sure those who strive and want to learn will. I believe what you put in is what you'll get out, as long as the program isnt that bad. You did get into BCIT so there is that option!!

@mdana93 CONGRATS! way to go getting into BCIT! proud of you!

I hope everyone gets in :) I got accepted to the Camosun/UVic program and think I will go with that one. I am still curious to see if I got into UBC. Good luck to everyone :)

WAY TO GO CONGRATS on getting into Camosun/Uvic program! I have heard great things about it!

I'm from Toronto and would be moving to BC(res) if accepted to the program. Anybody else not from BC? And have you already applied for residential housing? Or are you waiting for an acceptance?

I'm from BC, but not Vancouver. I've already applied for residential housing just in case I get accepted. :)

Congratulations on getting into Camosun/UVic! My sister-in-law is graduating from that program this year and she LOVED it.

Just out of curiosity, did you also apply to UofT? :)

Nope, I was missing g a pre requisite, tbh UBC is my best shot because they only look at last year's GPA, and don't weigh in Anat and Phys into the avg. Just hoping my Casper and supplementary app were good enough.

@Tornurs oh fair enough! Well, fingers crossed we hear back this week!

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it seems like placements are only in term 5. The rest of the program you're in a lab with a manequin from what I'm gathering. But if I'm wrong (which I honestly hope I am) please do correct me. It's quite worrying if we don't get to practice our skills on actual humans until the end of the program when BCIT and Douglas students have clinicals from day 1. Just in terms of how competent we'll be as nurses...

Just to clarify: you do practice placements the whole way through the program. The curriculum has changed slightly for 2017 applicants, but this past 2016 intake, we were in clinical by week 4 of the program. This is where the intensity of this program is really felt. The outline you are referring to is showing the classes, and within one of those classes/courses per semester there is clinical (2 or 3 days a week usually beginning in week 2 of each course). Not to worry, you get plenty of practice time, but probably less lab time when compared to other programs (from talking with friends in other programs). The drawback is less time to learn pathophysiology beforehand, but there are other benefits. Also keep in mind, a lot of what you hear from nurses who have worked with UBC grads are from experiences with students who graduated more than 5 years ago, and this reputation no longer applies.

@julianth thank you so much for sharing that information! It's great to hear from a current UBC student.

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend! I've got my fingers crossed that we all receive some good news this week! :)

I'm actually on pins and needles for you all. I remember all too well how I felt this time last year (and the year before). I'm truly rooting for all of you get the positive email. But, if you don't, that doesn't mean you should give up. I know what it's like to get both, and after the tears I was just more determined the second time around. Good luck everyone!
