UBC BSN September 2017

Published

Hi Everyone!

I've been searching for a thread for applicants to UBC's BScN program for September 2017, but I haven't found one. Please feel free to point me in the direction of an existing thread, or add to this one! I'm applying to UBC, U of T, and UWO for September, but UBC is definitely my first choice. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

:)

Hey guys I got into BCIT!!! UBC would be my number 1 just cuz it's a shorter program and you guys sound great but yay at least my back up wants me! I have to accept by the 27th so I reallyyyy hope UBC gets back to us by then

Congratulations @mdana93 !!! :) That's so exciting! I'm in the same boat. I have two weeks to accept my offer to UofT so I hope we hear back from UBC before then!

@tdmah fingers crossed!

Have you guys checked out how they reformatted the program for 2016-2018? Cuz it looks like we only have clinicals for 3 months at the end of program. And that's pretty crappy

seems like there are still placements.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it seems like placements are only in term 5. The rest of the program you're in a lab with a manequin from what I'm gathering. But if I'm wrong (which I honestly hope I am) please do correct me. It's quite worrying if we don't get to practice our skills on actual humans until the end of the program when BCIT and Douglas students have clinicals from day 1. Just in terms of how competent we'll be as nurses...

I think some of the courses that we are taking involve practicum, however at the end it is just months straight of hospital work!

Thank you!!! So it looks like we do get some hospital practice in before the preceptorship. That make me feel a bit more relieved. Freaked out there for a good few minutes

Just to chime in, the multiple people I spoke to that were in the "first" year of the UBC program, they were already in the hospitals practicing things. The way it worked this year was you learned a skill in lab, solidified it in hospital. Went back to lab, learned something new, and so on and so forth! Unless the changes that the faculty approved impact that then we should be doing the same! Pretty sure we will get enough clinical hours even before the last placement!

@to-be-nurse I hope so. I'm getting a tad discouraged as I have recently reconnected with some nurse friends back from my rch volunteering days and they all advised against UBC as app new grads have a hard time keeping up in a hospital. They may just be Debbie Downers but I still worry...

I'm from Toronto and would be moving to BC(res) if accepted to the program. Anybody else not from BC? And have you already applied for residential housing? Or are you waiting for an acceptance?

Hey I'm from calgary so I'd be living in res! I applied awhile ago since I've heard res is hard to get into if you're not a first year student. :)
