UBC BSN September 2015 Applicants

Published

Alright who's applying to the UBC Vancouver BSN September 2015 intake? I'm a second year UBC science student who's applying :) Let's all support and communicate with each other for registration help and processing !

Congrats everyone who got accepted! Pianoboysam I got wait listed and I am not within the top 10 so I don't see it happening this year. Pretty disappointed but I am waiting on BCIT for January now.

For all those who were accepted for this coming September, would you mind sharing what you did that you believe helped you get an interview, as well as what you think you did right (or thought you did wrong) in the interview? It would be greatly appreciated. Knowing how I can improve my supplemental application next year would be really helpful. I have a great resume with mostly management positions and lots of volunteer, but neither my work or volunteer were healthcare related. Although in my essay I wrote about my experience related to the healthcare (they were not official volunteer positions), I'm not sure it was even read as I scored only a 4 on the supplemental. Since being turned down, I have taken on five different healthcare volunteer positions and a job in housekeeping at my local hospital (although I am extremely over-qualified for this and had to beg for the job, so I don't want to be wasting my time). The housekeeping job has a lot of patient contact and I am learning a lot of stuff relevant to nursing, but I also have two children and help my husband run his business, so between the job and the volunteer, this is all huge time investment for me - not to mention having to work in a low wage job. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi julianth ! I received my grading and I was in the top 25% for my application, which is frustrating. I have an undergraduate degree from UBC in health, a management diploma from BCIT in healthcare management and have been working full time as a manager in an office and within the natural health field. I have been volunteering at a hospital for over a year, and also have a few practicum placements from my undergrad which may have helped me for experience. My supplemental application was very broad, with work and volunteering and also alot of travel and personal lifestyle contributions I had on it....To be honest I was surprised at first how well I did with my application..but reading it over I just can see I tried to put the best possible version of myself forward and it worked! It is such a stressful and grueling process...one thing I will say is if you get an interview in future years, please please please practice. I had practiced hundreds of questions for weeks and thought I was completely ready, but they still manage to surprise you. Its not painful, but frustrating because I know all I wanted was to get in and that decision relied on how the 7 interviewers felt based on my interviews.

Anywhoo..I have applied to BCIT for January and likely will not apply to UBC if I get in.

to everyone that got in, congrats!!! Can't wait to meet you :)

to everyone waitlisted, good luck!

and to those who did not receive the news they were hoping for, hang in there. I was not even waitlisted when I applied last year, but I learned so much from the process that I was able to put to use when I re-applied this year. And it gave me a lot of time to reflect on why I wanted to be a nurse and I was able to develop some skills and gain some experiences that I was able to talk about in the interviews. So stay strong!

I guess I should have included I was wait listed that is why I was frustrated after finding out how well I had done on the initial process.

I got my acceptance yesterday as well - congratulations everyone! I'm really looking forward to being in the program and meeting everyone! I've got my CPR certification, but need to re-du it to get the HCP certification -- hopefully we can have everyone join the group that was set up for our cohort and maybe people want to join together and get the certification done together!

For those that have posted about asking what made the difference... this was my third time applying and the first time I got an interview. I can see now what changed from not getting one, to getting one. Hopefully what I write can help in some way for your future application!

On the application:

I was way more detailed in each section of the supplemental application this year in comparison to the application I submitted last year. I spent more time detailing how each experience has contributed in some way to me being ready to become a nurse. In each section I made sure to speak about how the qualities I have as a person make me ready to be in the program. That was the major difference from getting no interview, to getting an interview. I can see looking back now that my two previous applications were pretty weak in comparison to this year. This year, instead of just outlining what I did in each position, I thought a lot about the qualities they were looking for in an applicant and wrote about how each position helped me develop those qualities.

As for the interview... I spent a lot of time thinking about what I said that was good and what was bad. I don't think I did great in two of the rooms out of 7 but the rest I felt pretty confident about my answers - I think I had about 30 seconds left in the 6 minutes on almost every room. The thing I thought I did well on in all of the rooms was making sure that they could see my personality in the 6 minutes that I had and answering the question clearly from all perspectives, not just my own. In the rooms I felt I didn't do so great on, I just didn't feel confident that I went in the right direction with what I was saying.

Obviously I am no expert, but reflecting on my past two applications this is what I think made the difference for me personally. Good luck to everyone applying again in the future!

ssfish2015 Everything you wrote is super helpful to me. Thank you so much!

Hey everyone, I also received my acceptance offer yesterday. Such a relief! I look forward to meeting you so soon!

Hey guys.

So this year was the first year I applied.. and was accepted.

I didnt realize how competitive this program was..

Anyways.. So for my MMI.. I practised with a few of my friends who were accepted into med school. I actually bought a MMI prep course online. it was only 25$.. but it kinda helped me.. gave me the break down of things..

my responses were very planned. I practised alot.. so right when I saw the question. I knew what to say/ what to think about.

I am only 22. and I know my grades weren't super spectacular. like 3.4?

My supplemental application helped me out a lot.

I have a paper published, went to Peru to volunteer, I work in a clerical position at the hospital.

In many ways I always felt I wanted to be a researcher.. but when I thought about it.. I had so many nursing-like experiences... that I just decided to apply. I am super glad I did.. and now I know this is where I want to be.

But don't give up.. and start writing your supplemental application now.. even some drafts.. it will really help you out.

I wish you guys the best of luck!

I can't find the Facebook group... :( is there something I'm missing? haha

Took me a while to find it too! I just searched UBC Nursing under Groups and then scrolled down for a bit until I found it.

oh found it! thanks! :)
