UBC BSN September 2015 Applicants

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Alright who's applying to the UBC Vancouver BSN September 2015 intake? I'm a second year UBC science student who's applying :) Let's all support and communicate with each other for registration help and processing !

[xQUOTE=Bee_Van5;8489831]Congrats everyone who got accepted! Pianoboysam I got wait listed and I am not within the top 10 so I don't see it happening this year. Pretty disappointed but I am waiting on BCIT for January now.

Don't give up Bee! I think I read that last year at least 15 people got off the wait list. It's not over yet.

Hi guys,

I applied for this program for the first time this year and was also accepted.

This is major career change for me. Because I read these forums religiously before applying, I thought I would share some of my experiences:

Grades

My grades were not great at all. I think my supplemental is what carried me through. I obviously have the minimum requirements but they were by no means excellent grades.

Supplemental

I am a bit older so I definitely had some life experiences to pull from. Without going into too much detail here, I think it's important to relate all your answers back to a career in nursing (not explicitly, of course). For example, Instead of saying I worked in an office where I answered the phone, filed and greeted customers” you could say I worked in an office where I needed to show discretion when dealing with confidential information or I worked with a variety of personalities and showed flexibility when working under time constraints.” While volunteering in healthcare is not required, I'm glad I was able to pull a lot of examples from my experiences doing this for both my supplemental and the MMI. FYI: my volunteer experience in healthcare had been for less than six months at the time of submitting my application (granted, I had lots of other volunteer experience but not in healthcare). Make sure to give yourself lots of time to work on the supplemental. I literally started working on it as soon as it was made available.

MMI

I honestly did not prepare too much for this. Because a lot of the questions are scenario-based, it's kind of hard to. That being said, I am very comfortable with public speaking and interviews in general. If that's something that's not really your forte, then you can certainly practice the 6-minute speaking process to gain confidence. I did look up a lot of MMI examples online and made sure to answer the questions from each perspective of the individuals included in the scenario.

Hello,

I have never posted on here but have been reading it for the past two years. I also applied for the first time this year and was accepted.

My grades were a mix of things....I went to Langara College many many years ago and got terrible grades. I then went back to school just in 2013 and for the last two years have been taking a mix of online courses and night classes. I did my A & P online through Athabasca University because it worked for me with scheduling as it was almost impossible to find a class that I could get into without being part of a program and because it also had no lab component.. I just wrote my final on friday but I will say it was a hard class with a ton of studying. The past two years I have gotten really good grades, all in the A range. They only count the last 30 credits so my Langara credits counted but not towards my GPA so that helped me a lot.

In my supplemental I just wrote from my heart about why I wanted to be a nurse. I didn't have any degrees or much volunteer work but rather life and work experience. I have worked for the school district as an education assistant for the past 16 years and have juggled a family and full time school for the past 2 years and I think that helped me. I think being older was a bonus and my commitment to finish my courses while trying to work full time showed my dedication and determination to complete the pre requisites to start a new career. I wrote about what would make me a good nurse and why I wanted to be one. I added some humour and personalized my essay. In all the other categories I didn't list things I more wrote paragraphs about anything I could add (some sections were a little bare)

For the MMI's I started practicing early. I printed off the list of questions of MMI's from the UBC website and then met up on two separate occasions with two nurse friends and went over each question step by step. I told them what I would answer and they in turn told me whether my answer was good and how to supplement it (how a nurse may think). The questions I didn't know I googled and I also googled some current events in the medical world. For my actual interviews I felt very prepared and the questions I practiced were very relevant. I tried to be myself and convey the person I am and not who I think they want. Just be yourself!

Good luck to everyone else applying for the next intake and I look forward to meeting everyone in the program.

Hi everyone,

I'm just curious is there any one on the waitlist got in? I'm 11 and still waiting...

Has anyone received their official "Letter of Admission" - either on the SSC or by mail? I'm an international student so I'm waiting on that letter to submit my study permit application. The sooner the better so I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking it somewhere...!

Hi yes I received both a email acceptance and then a letter in the mail with a generic UBC welcome book. They said we should receive nursing specific information at the end of June. I might call the school if you haven't received your mailed letter yet...I live in BC but I got my letter at least 3 weeks ago.

I was 10 on the wait list and just got an acceptance. I'm a little torn because I also got into Queen's and I'm unsure about which I would prefer. Especially because I also applied to UofT and haven't heard back yet. I can't find anything comparing UBC and Queen's so I have no idea which has a better or more reputable program

Hey guys,

I just have a change of heart and decided to go into nursing but my GPA is around 2.80-2.90.

I have 5 years experience working at both adult and children's emergencies as well as hospital clerical jobs.

Are there anybody who were in the same situation as mine (low gpa but lots of experience) who got into the program?
