Hey everyone! I'm currently a student at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. I graduate this December and I'll be applying to UAB's AMNP program this Fall for the Spring 2017 class! I hope this group/thread can be used to help each other out through the application process. Also, to anyone currently in the AMNP program, please don't hesitate to drop in and share your application experience! :)
In my information session, the facilitator asked for a "show of hands" of people who would be working during the semester. She then said she definitely wouldn't recommend trying it during phase I, or at least until you're acclimated to the rigorous pace. It's difficult... how are we supposed to pay for school and living without jobs :***:? I guess that's what they think loans are for...
As for my speciality, I've had my eye on the dual acute/ primary care pediatric NP. I really think I want to practice in a private setting, but the dual certification would definitely give me more flexibility when it comes time to lock down a job.
I've tried to save and prepare for not working during the first year as much as I can. I am currently working full time and we have a mandatory pension plan but I will be withdrawing all of the money if and WHEN accepted. I've been planning for this for about a year now but I'm sure my savings won't cover everything. My second option is loans. I believe for graduate school you can can recieve up to 10,000 a semester for loans. Of course I would never take out that much but it is an option if need be. The way I look at it $30,000 or less for a nurse practitioner program is not bad. I plan to pay for the phase 2 courses out of pocket as I'm working as an RN. I would be happy just to be accepted into the program. I'll worry about finances later. Also there are a lot of loan repayment programs for NPs where you work in rural areas for a period of time and a portion of your loans are paid. There is also the public service forgiveness option. For those of you who are out of state check out the Academic common market to see if your state qualifies for in state tuition! I know that Georgia is one. I hope that we are all accepted!
Has anyone ever read of anyone being interviewed and not getting accepted? Just curious. I remember asking the program manager if an interview was an indication of acceptance. She said generally, yes unless something goes wrong in the interview. Also did everyone in previous years recieve their decision on the same day as their interview?

I'll take "generally, yes"!! I'm hoping they pretty much make their decisions before interviews and then conduct the interviews just to make sure we aren't crazy Either way, by one month from today we will have the final decisions!!
There's a thread I think from last year where someone had an interview but was denied. I'm finding major comfort in the fact that pretty much everyone that posted on here from previous cohorts said the interview was laid back.
I'm so nervous, but I'm so pumped at the same time!! Two weeks y'all!!

I think I'm going to go PRN at one or both of my jobs. When I went to the info session, the guy told me that were only a handful of students out of all the cohorts that were able to work and complete the program successfully. He also said there was one girl in particular that would work on the weekends as a CNA (I think?) while she attended classes during the week. There's a woman too I used to work with that knows a girl who was accepted and she said she could only work like once or twice a month. I guess it all depends on what you can handle.
I'm not ready to let my jobs go, but if that's what it takes so be it í ½í¸¬
