Hi!
I haven't seen a thread made for the TWU Spring 2018 application process, so decided to start one! I'm the type to worry, and I know I'm not alone, so what better place to vent than here? For anyone wondering, the application date for Spring 2018 is August 15th, 2017!
My GPA comes out to a 3.720 with TWU preference. I haven't taken my TEAs yet, but plan to soon.
How about y'all?
hi! I have not met my entire cohort, and at the 1st orientation many people brought friends/family with them. However, it seems to be 85-90% Female, ages are from I think 19-40+, and education experience from traditional college Junior up to a PhD student. There are about 110 students in the class now.
Is this at the Houston campus? Did you apply/get accepted to other colleges? What made you chose TWU over others? Will your face to face classes contain 110 students or will they be divided into smaller classes? Trying to get a feel for TWU to see if it is something I would enjoy. I'm trying to set up a tour of the campus now.
Apologies if you answered all of these questions elsewhere on the forum!

Yes I am at the Houston campus. I applied to TWU, UTA, UTHSC.... I was not accepted at UTHSC for Spring or Summer, and decided I no longer liked the school so I did not apply for Fall. TWU administration was nicer, more transparent about admissions/ranking policies, and super helpful. UTHSC just rubbed off a bad vibe, and it was annoying seeing someone with a 3.2 GPA and borderline HESI accepted while I was denied with stellar scores.
I was accepted at UTA, and I chose not to attend because I want more interaction with my professors than just the online, and I did not like that their clinical locations were all about an hour outside Houston, in good traffic conditions.
All of our classes are in one room, all 110 students together. We are broken up into smaller groups for Assessments lab and clinicals. I think the max there is like 10 to a group (still have not received lab/clinical schedule).
When I went to see TWU, have an advising appointment, and submit some paperwork, I got a great feel from them. That was it, I kinda knew that's where I wanted to be. I had the same feeling when I toured schools in the Northeast for my 1st Bachelor's and it's how I chose my first undergrad school. It was a great decision for me, and I am confident this one will be too.
trg8689,
I chose to only apply to TWU this semester for some of the same reasons as pappa2v. There have been a few comments on previous UTHSC boards that I'm copying/pasting here that have helped pave the path to TWU for me.
One person wrote:
"I do have a classmate that is at UT that's started last semester and that 15 students have been placed on hold already which means they are retaking this semester and that many are saying is a lot since is a 15 month program."
This doesn't mean that students aren't placed "on hold" or whatever you call it at TWU (I've never heard anything in regards to TWU, though), but 15 students (around 12.5% of the class) feels like a high percentage of nursing students not grasping concepts, especially for such a reputable program.
Another previous student who has graduated from UTHSC wrote this - kind of highlighting the pros/cons of each program. His opinion is obviously pro-TWU, though, so my guess is that he didn't have a great experience at UTHSC:
"TWU's program is superior to UT's, I feel, having been through UT's, and helping my close friend get into TWU's program (he's 1 semester from graduating, I've been helping him the whole time).
It's paced better, which makes a huge difference, but there is less emphasis on erudition. Take that as you will. UT wants to prepare students for the NCLEX with every exam you take. TWU seems to focus on just getting concepts down. They both suffer from ego-infused/anecdotal examination questions.
TWU does a lot of hand holding, which UT does not. I really would have enjoyed that. Further TWU has a remarkable track record for research, where UT lacks (despite having an entire department dedicated to that). But, that's my opinion.
I hope you enjoy your time at TWU. The sad thing about TWU is the ugly as heck scrubs. Hahaha, but know that TWU students in their final semester have a golden rep in the med center.
But those scrubs. Haha"
And I've heard from someone else, maybe on this thread, that they know someone in TMC HR that has reiterated TWU's fantastic reputation when dealing with new hires.
UTHSC's pace as well as less-than-clear admission requirements (as well as reviews from their own students) made me look elsewhere. TWU's reputation locally, as well as the stellar research backgrounds of the professors, and high NCLEX pass rates made me feel like they were my absolute right choice. Dealing with them during this application process (very clear and communicative and helpful) has only solidified that thought. Of course, these are only opinions of people who probably haven't had the happiest time dealing with UTHSC or other schools in the area. I'm sure you can find a lot of pros about each of the programs offered in Houston (there are a lot of great programs) as well as cons, but I know those were some of the factors that reinforced my decision to go TWU all the way. I hope this helps! Now, let's hope I get in this Spring and my determination hasn't been all for naught. :)

Maybe I'll get lucky & be able to wear those "super cute" uniforms next semester:)
pappa22v,
Thank you so much for your response! It really helped me out and calmed my nerves. I, like you, have not had good vibes from UTHSC in regards to their admission process. Vague process and I do not agree with the randomness of who they accept or do not accept. Plus, every person I have gotten on the phone has been a grouch!
Really enjoyed the ease in which I can contact a counselor at TWU and their admission process is simple and direct. I don't like the large classroom size (110) but am comforted by the small lab/clinical group size. And yay for new, cute scrub uniforms!
Good luck next week, I'll be sending good vibes your way :)
