Two Narc Discrepancies, One Night

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Okay, so I have been an RN on a busy telemetry floor in for exactly 10 months and 7 days after starting there as a new graduate. During that time, I have seen four different nurse managers and just about every kind of patient imaginable. However, this most recent manager has it out for me. She has nitpicked about everything I have done. Unfortunately, she dropped in my inbox last night two narc discrepancy write-ups from one night.

One, was I am more than willing to admit I didn't document the waste on because I was unaware that it was considered a narcotic (10mL of pink lady). The other (0.5 mg of dilaudid) I could've sworn I got a witness to document with me as my patient was getting around the clock down to the minute, but I think it may have been a new hire who may not have charted the waste correctly. Anyway, I have been crying nonstop. I love my job despite the craziness I have endured, but this manager seriously hates me, as she told me when I first met her that she, "Doesn't believe anyone inexperienced should be allowed near this floor."

I guess my question is what should I do and what should I expect to happen? I told them on the paperwork I would gladly submit to a drug screen to resolve this as I have nothing to hide. Please help, I haven't eaten or slept for quite some time now and I am tired of crying.

Pink lady, as in enema?? No controlled substances in there...I don't recall offhand what is in it, but they're delivered to our unlocked med cubbies which controlled drugs are not. Magic Mouthwash is pink and contains Benadryl, but Benadryl is an OTC med. Add me to the confused list.

jadelpn gave some good advice. Deep breath, and please eat!

This and the OP confuse me.

Do a lot of nurses give meds without knowing what they are?

Pink Lady? How can you safely give anything if you don't know what it is?

I never said I didn't know WHAT was in it only that I wasn't sure WHY it's included in our narc count...

Well, what is it?

The GI cocktails that I'm familiar with have 5-10 mL of Donnatal which does contain Phenobarbital.. so this would be why it would be considered a controlled substance.

Hey, sorry I haven't been on in a while, been busy. Anyway, the issue hasn't been brought up anymore which may be partially due to me wishing to either quit or transfer out by the end of June. I have gone from loving to hating my job under this new manager so I'm trying to get out, even though I doubt they'll be around much longer either. About the pink lady, it contains Benadryl, lidocaine, an antacid, and which I didn't know at the time, phenobarbital. It comes pre-mixed from pharmacy so I just went by what I researched online about it. I have definitely learned from all this and I thank all of you for your replies. All I can say is that I hope I am happier elsewhere. I am worn out physically and mentally from my job lately, I spend my off days fearing that this manager is gonna call me yet again upset about something.

I have never heard of the "pink lady." I have heard of GI cocktails but our mixture isn't controlled. Ours are greenish though. I know it has lidocaine, maalox, and some other drug I can't remember right now.

Benadryl

"Pink Lady"...what does the LABEL say though? What does it say on the MAR?

I hate to keep harping on the pink lady, but did the pharmacy not send up a waste sheet with it or a narcotic count sheet? Ours always does that with any controlled substance they mix, and the nurse has to sign for the drug upon receipt as well.

At any rate, I'm glad you're going elsewhere. I hope you're happier on a new unit.
