Trying to pick a city:Houston, Dallas, or Austin?

Published

Opinions wanted! Used to live in Austin travelled to Houston often and been to Dallas a few times. They all have great things about them. Here's my pros and cons...and really nervous about the job markets in some of them.

Austin Pros:

Beautiful Hill Country

Medium sized, liberal town

Right in the middle for drives to HOU or DFW

Used to live there, familiarity is good

Austin Cons:

Not as many hospitals not sure what nursing market is like

Not as much to do as in larger cities (museums, etc)

Can be pricey for houses

Dry like the dessert

Dallas Pros:

Loved Plano area

The culture,shopping

The houses

Sports teams, museums,

Change of seasons as compared to rest of cities

Dallas Cons:

Tornadoes more prevalent

Houses can be pricey too

Crime rates

Houston Pros:

Love the heat

Great houses and affordable

Culture, museums,sports

Katy Mills,shopping,Ikea

Nursing market seems favorable

Great master planned communities

Houston Cons:

Heard about giant flying roaches(never saw them)

Crime rates

Anyone else confused now? Anyone have a favorite? Thanks for listening!

Dplear,

I sent you a PM.

I lived recently in Austin and Georgetown (just north of Austin). I liked Austin but traded it for Hawaii. :roll

Hi,

Can anyone tell me about Irving or Grand, Texas? I've heard of them both but don't have any specifics to go on. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

what Houston Hospitals would you recommend working at as a new grad

I am a tried and true Fort Worthian, so I am a bit biased, but Austin is a great place to live, too. They just put an IKEA in Frisco (North Dallas). The great thing about the metroplex is that you are 45 minutes- 1 hour away from everything you could ever imagine. Like I said, I'm from Ft. Worth, and there's almost an ongoing "rivalry" between the two cities, so in my opinion, there are very few things worth driving to Dallas for. :p

GO TCU BEAT SMU!!!

I say go for Austin. I live in the Dallas area, and while I like it here I certainly don't love it. At the same time, it really depends on what you're looking for. If you're an active person who likes the outdoors, Austin is the best of the three cities, it's a cool city. It's scenic with lots of lakes and things to do. It's also a big college-town. I've been in Dallas for 3 1/2 yrs and days can go by before I see someone walking/biking/jogging. If you're looking for a city with a vibrant downtown/nightlife, you're best bet is Houston and Austin hands down (Dallas doesn't have a downtown:angryfire). Houston revitalized parts of their downtown just in time for the Superbowl and made it better. If you're looking for weather, then you might as well forget all 3 cities all together. And if you're looking in terms of people, then I'd say Austin or Houston. Dallasites overall are known for being aloof, indifferent and pretentious. There's a nursing shortage everywhere so there's no lack of job opportunities in any of those cities, regardless of what specialty you're looking into. I don't know if you're looking at teaching vs. nonteaching hospitals, but I wouldn't particularly recommend any of the ones in Dallas, I'll leave it at that...

The crime in this town is WAY down. I feel safe walking downtown at night to the different clubs and restaurants. I live in a very safe neighborhood. My kids attend the BEST school district in the state. Katy school district. Just check the stats...

I have no trouble commuting around town. I live 35 miles from my work and it takes me about 45 minutes to get home during traffic.

The wages for nursing here are the highest in the state. we have the worlds largest medical center right here. We have more hospital beds per capita than any other city in the world. The cost of living is dirt cheap. I pay right now 1.29 per gallon for gas. My house is 2500 square feet 4 bedroom 3 bath 2 car garage and with a pool you could get it for 135,000. formal dining and also a game room.

All in all Houston is not a bad place to live. You can have a great life here if you want. I personally prefer the west side of town to the north but both areas are nice.

Would someone out there be kind enough to tell me a little something about Ft. Worth? I am possibly going to relocate there upon graduation from LVN school in Oct. 2005. Which neighborhoods are desirable and/or safe? How is the city's culture? Any other pertinent information would be enormously appreciated. Thank you!

Irving is a nice surround city; homes are expensive for their sizes, Baylor hospital, One mall, good schools, bus line, overall a good city with culture, right outside of Dallas. Grand Prairie is known for horse races, no bus line, in my op kind of a dead town, no good mall, homes are reasonable price

I live near Dallas, but if I had the chance I would move to Austin. It is beautiful, has magnet hospitals, and is smack dab in the middle of Texas.
