Trying to avoid undesirable CNA duties

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Does anybody know of any CNA jobs where you don't have to wash the patients or or wipe butts? Also I'm a sophomore BSN student with an associates in engineering and 6 months volunteer work at a hospital and worked in plant engineering at another hospital. Might any of this helps with job oppertunities where I don't have to wipe or wash people?

If you stay in engineering plants, you won't have to wipe people. I don't know of any CNA work where that doesn't happen. Quite honestly, nurses are not immune to the wiping requirement either ;)

Psych units usually involve much less personal/ADL care than lots of other settings (except for gero psych units), although there's no guarantee you would never have to do anything like that.

If you're already a 2nd year BSN student and you are against wiping butts, you might consider a different major/profession. The "higher up the ladder" you get, the nastier the gore becomes.

hahahahaha...nope. youre in the wrooooong field. whats the problem? its not that gross...???

Over the last decade and a half, I've been a Mechanical Engineer, Compliance Engineer, Quality Engineer, Design Engineer, and Project Manager. Now I am a Nursing Student, CNA, and Home Health and Hospice Aide.

I do more good for this world by "wiping butts" and many other CNA duties than I ever did at any of those jobs (some of which are now done in China) you see above. There are parts of my job I don't like much - cleaning up vomit is one - but if a patient needs that service I provide it and take pride in doing it well.

Not sure what kind of a response you wanted to see here, but if you are starting your career "trying to avoid" duties well within your current scope of practice, perhaps you should continue your engineering career instead of becoming a nurse. Watch out though, you may find some engineering duties FAR more distasteful.

As I said to one coworker who asked how I handle CNA duties after spending so much time in corporate America, "I'll tell you this: I would much rather wipe butts than kiss them!"

Instead of working as a CNT I suggest you get a job working in a store or restaurant. We nurses have to clean booties just like the CNT's. I understand if it's not your thing but then maybe you don't belong in nursing. Just a thought.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

When my mom(an RN) was trying to convince me to take a CNA class last year, I was totally against it. I said "Eww Mommy I hear CNA's do all the dirty work like wiping poop & giving baths!!"

Her response? "Honey, I've been a nurse for almost 30 years. I still wipe butts & give baths. If you don't want to clean butts or wipe people I suggest you change your major now."

Sure, wiping people and giving baths isn't very glamourous or whatever, but I enjoy what I do. I like to think I make a difference in somebody's life. Being a nurse isn't just about passing pills & making big bucks.

Im still in Clinicals as a CNA and I don't mind wiping butts and giving baths. Its not the greatest thing, but its not the worst either.

You will do your fair share of butt-wiping and washing as an RN. I can't think of a job where you wouldn't have to do at least SOME of that as a CNA- OR RN, except maybe working in a doctors office, or if it's just the thought of adult poop, you could work with only kids.

If you really can't stand the thought of poop/washing people etc, you should seriously rethink being a nurse.
