Trump Admin Will Protect Health Workers Who Refuse Services On Religious Grounds

Health care workers who want to refuse to treat patients because of religious or moral beliefs will have a new defender in the Trump administration.

The top civil rights official at the Department of Health and Human Services is creating the Division of Conscience and Religious Freedom to protect doctors, nurses and other health care workers who refuse to take part in procedures like abortion or treat certain people because of moral or religious objections...

... Louise Melling, deputy legal director at the American Civil Liberties Union, said those conscience objections could expand to allow health workers to refuse some services to gay, lesbian and transgender people...

When I was in Nursing school about 1978, there was no question about who to take care of. We were taught to keep our beliefs etc to ourselves it was not up to us as nurses to judge anyone, we were there to provide the care required. If there was an issue we were totally against then we were told nursing may not be the place for us or find a position that would keep us from being in contact with that situation. If patients don't want me to care for them for what ever reason, they have the right to request someone else, and this may or may not be able to be done, so it would be addressed accordingly. Many people are coming into nursing for many different reasons, and they need to try to do some quality self reflection before they do.

We should be allowed to remain true to our morals. As long as we are able to secure a willing staff member, shouldn’t be a problem

As a professional nurse I do not believe that your personal opinions should impede on your ability to take care of the patients you have been assigned to. Nurses are not here to judge others and refusing care for someone because you don’t agree with them is a huge form a judgment in my eyes.

Transgender reassignment is not a life saving surgery. Nor is abortion in many cases. That being said, I would never refuse post op care to anyone.

it depends on who you ask.... someone can love the body they were born in and still identify as transgender. another person who is transgender can hate every single thing of their body and can become suicidal or self-harming because of the psychological torment of being transgender. so yes, any sexual reassignment surgery could be and is life-saving. it can also improve the quality of life- kinda like removing a bone spur.

He never would have that bone spur removed. It kept him out of the military and Vietnam:)

I believe the name was “religious whack jobs”

You called someone silly, and Juniper went right off the deep end. I missed the religious whack job reference, but that's pretty darn mild considering the thread topic. Let's move on folks, or this thread will degenerate.

I think (fair warning: my opinion here) that as with many other things the Trump administration is spouting off with new "regulations and directives" without actually spelling out what they mean. Basically a sentence that pleases his so called base but without any details as to what it actually means, who it pertains to, how to implement it, etc. I would say that this, along with other things that have come out of this train wreck of an administration, has no real chance of ever actually going into effect, because the lawsuits blocking it will tie up the courts for years....

He's the president, wealthy, and he went to an Ivy league school and did well. You think he doesn't know what he's doing? He also has advisors who are lawyers, judges, etc. I don't think this applies to life saving procedures. Saying Trump is not intelligent is like Saying Obama isn't intelligent. They're smart.

How do you know he did well in school? He has an undergrad degree in business from a school which "educates" most of the Trumps. His classmates hardly knew him since he commuted from NYC to Philadelphia. It is a closely guarded secret by Penn how much money father Fred donated to them for the deal. An undergrad degree in business hardly equates a legal education and it shows:) How do you know he is a good businessman? He walks away from his debts by declaring bankrupcy - 4 times! The SDNY investigation for his tax returns is partly (besides frauds) because we have no idea how much money he owes Deutsche Bank or other foreign nationals. He is not smart; he is sly like a criminal but keeps shooting himself in the foot because he IS so stupid. A smart person would have listened to the wisdom of multiple people (including his own staff) that a really wicked virus is in our population and we need to react at once before the curve goes straight up. I don't understand how half the nation voted for someone without doing any research.

Are you a nurse or a patient? I just said that him and Obama are smart. I'm pretty sure Hillary is too. ----------------------------

My opinion coming up, you have been warned....Trump and his behavior has normalized the name calling and insulting. I don’t care who he is, where he went to school or how much money he has, he is a boorish rude individual that seems hell bent on destroying this country. It is childish and silly behavior and we need to rise above that.

there is another guy on here that said nursing isn't evidenced based practice. It's good to know that when your giving emergency treatment, that somebody with a license is just going to go with their gut!

WOW!
I told you it was my opinion. I respect the office of the President. I cannot and will not respect the current occupant. IN MY OPINION...he has not earned my respect.

The way I am seeing it, you seem to be all huffy (pardon if I am wrong) because someone has stated an opinion that is not in line with yours. Your response is to assume that there is something wrong with them.
I disagree with your view but I respect your right to have those views. Suppressing or discounting views (wether I Agree with them or not) by disparaging the holder is childish and silly behavior and exactly what I see Trump doing.
