Does anyone here know why Trazodone (Desyrel) is given? I administer alot of that medication from 50mg to 150mg to my patients and i want to know what that drug is used for? In the med book it is classified as antidepressant but also unlabeled use is for management of insomnia and management of chronic pain.
Trazadone or Trazodone is a useless drug for depression. Primarily used for sleep also seen it used for anxiety (not recently). Sedation is a side effect of the drug and in some, the dose is gradually inched up as the person becomes tolerant. Sometimes, having a bit of a drug holiday helps combat the tolerance.
I worked a Geri-Psych unit before I recently moved. A lot of my patients who were severely impaired due to Alzheimer's got this medication, as their minds would not calm down enough for them to sleep at night. I have had a patient before though, have an order written for Trazodone ( cannot remember the dosage) at 2100, may repeat x1 before two o'clock. And that patient, got the scheduled dose and the PRN repeat, still he was up walking the halls and getting into elderly women's beds screaming for Doris, lol. In my experience with it, it normally knocks people out, but not this fella. In answer to your question, the only thing I've ever give it for was sleep.

I recently had a patient that was getting 750 mg of trazadone at hs, plus 10 mg of ambien, 4 5/325 percocet, and 1 mg of klonopin. Needless to say I verified this order before giving it!! I kept a close eye on her all night, but she hardly slept!! Can you imagine
md put me on this [50mg at hs] to help with chronic fatigue..still have insommia...i take ambien 10 twice a week because work on weekend and have to have some sleep to do double shifts...
i don't want to advance to a higher dosage but i am still having insommia..i think i will take the suggestion of a holiday from trazodone for about a month and see if that will help
no problems with priaprism*** I M F ***lol

Holy Cow! Sounds close to a Dr. Kavorkian order!
My son was given Traza/Trazodone folowing his brain injury while trying to wake from a coma to establish a sleep/wake cycle. We had to stop it because he was barely functioning the following day. It worked for putting him to sleep at 9pm though...it was the waking part that was hell. :) AM therapies were terrible! He was a zombie....
The waking part is still hell...could be he's a 13 yr old MOSTLY healthy boy now though!!!!!!
Kid goes to bed at 9pm and is a bear to wake at 7am!! Gotta love those teen years! :)
I'm just thankful he's here to have them. :)

I'm sorry about your mom and yes, surprised at the amount. I'd never wake up. Or sleep for 24 hours.
