  1. Hello all, I'm new here, well not so new but haven't been active here for a good 2 1/2 years and I'm a pre-nursing student. I'm completely deaf and I wear a cochlear implant. My hearing aids were not powerful enough for me anymore so hence the cochlear implant and it's been a wonderful choice for me. I have good speech, know ASL/PSE, and lip read very well. My question here to you guys is where do you get special stethscopes that are for hearing impaired nurses ? I have been trying to find that out and no luck at all. thank you!
  2. Oh okay thank you so much!! That is actually something I'm interested in! I've just heard it referred to as "after surgery care" which I didn't think was the proper title. Thanks a lot!
  3. Hello all, it's been awhile since I last came to this website. I'm not in a nursing program just yet. I'm just doing research on what types of nursing is out there since I find all the different kinds of nursing fascinating. I've gotten some great information from some of the stickies on some of the forums here about what types of nursing are available. But I have yet to find what PACU stands for and what PACU nurses do? I would greatly appreciate an answer! Thank you!
  4. Actually guys, I am leaving this forum which is why I haven't responded to some of the comments on here. I got quite a few nasty pm's after I posted this and I tried to ignore it but people will be people and pass their judgement on other people. Maybe I should have not given so much information and just asked whether I should take the loans and kept my mouth shut. That is why you couldn't pm me back Tweety because I disabled all of my options and have since left. So thank you guys for all those KIND replies and will return only when I become a nurse and have a nursing question.
  5. I tried to post this before, so sorry if it ends up being doubled. I just also wanted to say thank you for educating me Elkpark. I didn't know that most doctors are not employees of the hospitals that they are allowed to do procedures at. I thought if you were allowed to do so then that meant you were an employee of the hospital. I still have a lot to learn so thank you fo taking the time to explain all of that to me.
  6. Elkpark, Thank you for clarifying that. I didn't know that doctors didn't have requirements to do if they wanted to do a special field.I knew that about nurses though. You would think that the rules for doctors would be so much more stricter than for nurses. I guess that was also my question. Maybe I should not have given so much information because it sounds like the other poster got confused. I am still learning about the field of nursing and am pretty clueless about doctors rules and stuff like that. Again thank you.
  7. oh thats awful! My mom was in a bad motorcycle wreck almost two years ago with a collasped and punctured lung. They had to intubate her and my mom was so out of it that they had to do it in the ambulance on the way to the hospital and I don't think that she got any pain medication for it beforehand either because of the way she talks. She says she remembers being intubated and she was in so much pain because basically her leg had been severed at the accident site since the car came in contact with her leg. It was just hanging on by like a piece of tissue from what I understand from her boyfriend at the time who was driving the motorcycle. But she said that she was pretty out of it but she could remember them talking about it but the situation was so critical they didn't have time to do the pain medication.
  8. Hi, I will give you a little back ground information on the situation before I ask my question. Before my husband and I got married his mom had a gastric bypass procedure. They went to this doctor that apparently was actually a general surgeon and he led them to believe that he was qualified to do gastric bypass procedures. I don't know how they fell for this since you can check with medical boards if they are in fact certified and qualified to do certain procedures. But anyways my hubby's mom ended up having the procedure done and from what I understand the surgeon left a hole in her stomach that was open and it infected her whole system since she was doing well enough at first to be put on a liquid diet. My husband's family won the lawsuit and they settled out of court just recently. My father in law asked the lawyer something about the hospital and was told that the hospital wasn't going to get in trouble or anything and the doctor is going to continue to be able to practice here in our state without any penalties or anything. My question is can that actually happen?? I have heard of doctors not getting in trouble but not in situations like these where according to my hubby's family the doctor blantantly lied about his qualifications. This really disturbs me because my old babysitter is an LVN and knows so many people that have gotten their licenses taken away from them for all sorts of reasons. BTW when my hubby's mother went to the ER and told them she had just had the procedure done they refused to even touch her or do any testing until the doctor got there and actually saw her and ordered the tests and whatever needed to be done. The doctor never got to her in the three days that she was in that hospital and she died. This to me is just blatant neglect, but I can understand the ER not wanting to do anything since she had such a serious procedure done. Plus everyone at the hospital was telling the family that she was gonna be fine but wouldn't give any specifics and all of that while she just steadily got worse. So in that case can the hospital not get in trouble or anything and the same question goes for the doctor too. Sorry this post is soo long but I felt like I needed to explain the situation as clearly as I can in order to get an informed answer if that makes sense.
  9. Oops I accidentally hit the send button. I also meant to mention that my uncle has also offered to pay my hospital bills from this month if I can't get any assistance in doing so. My husband was soo happy when we figured all this out that he cried. Mainly he was just glad he wasn't going to have to testify in court about what his mom went thru, but was really relieved about basically coming out of this debt free in the end. I cried too so LOL
  10. UPDATE: It's amazing how quickly things can go from bad to worse then from there to just AMAZING!! I went to the mail box at my hubby's insistence since he was expecting some news from his family's lawyer since they were pursuing a lawsuit against a general surgeon that performed a gastric bypass on my husband's mother and she died because basically the surgeon left a hole in her stomach. The surgeon led my husband's family to believe from what I understand that he was a specialist in the field and had done this type of procedure thousands of times. I don't know how you can believe that when you can ask to see their credentials and certificates and degrees and call the board and see if the doctor is certified and allof that crap. But anyways I got the mail and I saw the letter from the family's lawyer and my husband opened it because it was pretty thick and we were curious to what it said. Basically the doctor settled the lawsuit and has agreed to pay 200 thousand. My husband's part will be at least 50 thousand. This is gonna be enough to pay 30 thousand that we owe my father in law and enough to pay for my husband's school loan and pay my mom back for the money she has loaned us too. Plus we are gonna be able to p ay off our credit card which we have cut up. Then if things couldn't get any better, I checked my email and I got an email from my uncle who is in charge of my trust fund. He basically apologized for some of the comments he said and said that he would not try to take legal action if I decided to take the loans and use the trust fund to pay back the loans when I am eligible for my trust fund. And then said that he took it upon himself to research some of the loans that I actually qualified for and said he thought that the interest rates were too high and proceeded to tell me NOT to get the loans and that he will pay for everything in regards to going back to school even a private college because the wait list for all nursing programs are so long. And including books and lab fees and parking fees if there are any and that when I finally reach my goal of being a nursing student not to worry about the required student insurance and that he would also spring for malpractice insurance if need be and if I couldn't afford it while I was a student. Apparently he told his wife my aunt about my situation and what I was wanting to do and she just reamed him over some of the comments he said. And reminded him that my trust fund was for exactly to help me go to college, not just for a house. LOL I am so happy that the situation just seemed to resolve itself that I am just literally walking on air. Thanks everybody for their advice and just listening in general.
  11. Thanks EVERYBODY for their great advice and I know it is not as bad as it could be. I know some people who were actually homeless and going to high school with me but would not take any kind of "charity" because at one point I thought about offering them my couch to sleep on they were kicked out by their mom because their mom's boyfriend didn't like them, but was told by another person that they would be really insulted if I did that so I didn't. The same situation happened to me when my parents divorced and my mom got a live in boyfriend. He did everything he could to make my life miserable. He even would lock me out even though I had my own key and sometimes I would have to wait in my car or drive back to my dad's house and wake them up in the process in getting in the house. At one point I thought I was going to be homeless too because my home situation was so bad and I didn't want to live with my dad. But here in the state of Texas you have to live with a parent or legal guardian otherwise if you get picked up you get thrown in jail, I know somebody who that happened to and were returned to their parents only for the parent to tell the cop I don't want them here and I kicked them out which is also against the law as long as the kid is in high school no matter if they are 18 and still in high school. Sorry I have gone off topic. SO I do know it is not as bad as it could be.... BACK TO TOPIC lol... I just am extremely cautious in getting anything that has a interest rate attached to it besides a savings account. I don't even have a credit card right now. My parents raised me in extreme debt because they didn't know anything about credit cards when they got married so they just charged everything on it from food to whole vacations. They were in debt basically up til I was in my last years of high school. So I am just really leery of credit cards, loans and all of that. SO thank you for putting up with my ranting. I knew what I had to do I just didn't like the option lol.
  12. LOL I did get a reality check so thank you! I just decided to suck it up and get a job and take the loans. Maybe you should have read the entire thread and all the posts, Medsurgnurse.
  13. Oh I have the same problem. I have to have all four of my wisdom teeth taken out and I can't even get in to a oral surgeon that will take people without medical/dental insurance. Plus I can't take iburofen because I used to have really bad migraines and suffered rebound headaches and an allergic reaction to iburofen because I was taking so much. The same thing happened to my mom. I guess I will just have to tough it out til I get health insurance. I am working on it right now. Good luck to you with your impending wisdom removal. I wish I could just take a couple of pliers and yank them out myself. LOL
  14. What is this illness ? Sorry if it seems like a dumb question but my dr. is testing me for that if there is a test for it. I am not a nursing student yet so I am fairly clueless as to what it is and how to find out if you have it or not.
  15. wow that sounds cool... I will have to ask a person that I know that is in nursing school if they got to do that....But I agree I might not want to do that at home. Never know what you can get arrested for these days.
