Travelling with Excelsior Degree

Published

Question:

Once you have taken NCLEX and passed it, you are LICENCED and you simply transfer or articulate or whatever the word is...your license to the new state if you want to move, CORRECT??

So at that point, it doesn't matter one iota WHERE you went to school. It only matters WHERE you want to originally take NCLEX and get licensed. But its relatively easy to move your license. You just show the new BON your license and pay a fee and you are licenced in the new state.

Am I wrong about this????

Does your license say on it where you went to school?

I'm considering Excelsior and I REALLY want to do some travelling once I'm licensed. Anyone have expereince having trouble with travel agencies/jobs due to getting an Excelsior education??

I've been told that once you work at your first job, it doesn't really matter where you went to school, interviewers only really look at your work expereince. Getting your dream job right out of school may be challenging but eventually you can work your way into it. thoughts?

thanks.

You are ok. Ca accept the ISU RN BSN program. You will not be getting your degree with The College Network they are soley a puplishing company that just sells the test material and gives you info on where to test. Since you degree will be coming from ISU it is ok that you are testin on subjects through Excelsior ( as you degree is not coming from them). From what I have heard, is that Ca does not accept EC because there is not any clincal hours logged in and that is what the BON has a problem with. With EC you take clep, dantes to test out of generals, do nursing concepts on a self study basis, at the end you test out with CPNE(but not clinical hours)and then on to nclex. Ca at one points was not accepting ISU either for the same reason, but since ISU has partnered with Sonoma State Univeristy (located in CA) for the clinical component part of the program (495 clinical hours).

Wow thanks, you explained it so well Tracy,...I wonder why EC doesnt do the same..partner like ISU did...I enrolled just previous to the change in 2003, and have been procrastinating all this time..Paying my yearly enrollment fee.

Psychnurse, you sound like my cousin who lives in cally as well. He registered for EC the day before the deadline, and is still gearing up for NC 1. At least he gets to write off the enrollment fee on his taxes! LOL

Interesting thread. Are there any other states that will not permit licensing through Excelsior?

Alabama will not license a new grad from EC. From what I understand, you can endorse in after getting a year or more experience somewhere else.

The one exception to this is if you work at the VA. For that kind of government nursing position you don't even need to be licensed in the state in which you are working. You can work in the VA anywhere with any US state RN license.

This is exactly why I can't see why Cali won't excpt EC grads with X amount of experience. Ohh well, I hate earthquakes anyway.

LOL, earthquakes last no more than a minute.....True, unexpected at times....but it's better than living where you have hurricanes....I've experienced both....hehehe

Anyway, contact California BRN because they wont accept a grad from Excelsior who is taking the boards for the first time....but if you come from another state and have experience, then that might be a different story....You might be able to endorse right in.....Or they might make you take the state boards for California......Good luck trying to get a reply, I've called and I'm still waiting for a reply from email which I sent last month.....

I thought that CA has made it clear that they will no longer license people who got their basic nursing education through EC, period, regardless of where or for how long they have been practicing nursing since then ...

Disclaimer: I am a 2004 graduate of the ASN program at Excelsior College.

California has a time limit in place - I'm not sure when it was - that states that if you are not enrolled in the EC program before "x" date, you cannot obtain licensure in CA. I know that I can be licensed in CA, so I started (2003) before the cut-off date.

Some other states require an extended period of clinical.

Most will take your license on reciprocity, just like any other program.

If you have advanced your degree from ASN to BSN, you may be able to be licensed in CA. I believe that they look at these on a case-by-case basis. And remember, you can still work at federal facilities in CA (the VA, etc.) without a CA license.

Good luck!

Again, like I said, contact the California BRN....When I spoke with Excelsior awhile back....they advised to contact the California BRN because there were other circumstances that allowed Excelsior grads (from other states) to obtain California licensure....Not sure what they were, but contact them....I'm willing to get licensed in another state....and I'm still waiting for California BRN to contact me back.....Good Luck!
