traumatized by vermin

Published

I live in Tucson. I'm on the far northeast side. I've lived here for a few years. The vermin are traumatizing me. I just had an encounter with the BIGGEST SPIDER I HAVE EVER SEEN INSIDE. I'm still shaking. I realized after I saw it that it was too big to kill with a shoe. Long story short, it has left this world and its corpse is on my patio.

I am moving to Phoenix for nursing school soon, when my pre-reqs are done. I know that the newly developed areas have the most insects indoors, but still? Are certain areas worse than others? Does Phoenix have as many 'vermin' as Tucson? Here's what I experience outside: tarantulas on my sidewalk last week, bobcat by trash can a few days ago, a snake by my drive a few weeks ago, and javelina come by my bedroom window at night. Indoors: spiders, roaches, and the occasional scorpion. I have been stung by a scorpion. It actually wasn't too bad. A little nausea, cramps, rapid heart beat, and numbness. (((It's the large spiders that I cannot handle.))):uhoh3:

Someone mentioned brown recluse spiders a couple of posts back and I sympathize! I was bitten on each leg (2 different times!) and the first time my leg swelled up and the RN that took care of me told me that if I waited much longer to come in and be treated, I would have had to get surgery. As it is, it left a nasty scar on each leg. When I went to be treated, they told me that they like to live in small, dark places (i.e. closets, under bed sheets, etc) and that it probably bit me while I was sleeping. *shudder*

*edit for spelling

I'm curious, what can they do as far as treatment to prevent the bite area from getting worse?

I have one living outside my house. I've never seen it, but managed to get it's call recorded

Any ideas?

The other night my daughter, son in law and I were stripping younger son's drum room which had carpet overhead, panelling and egg cartons on the wall to absorb the noises. I was up on ladder shining the torch for S-i-l so he coukld see to cut the carpet near the light and not cut through any cables. Daughter started stripping off the panelling and screamed, S-I-L took off straight after her. I didn't see it but apparently a big rat had just careered out of wall. The next thing there is a thud and a nest of baby rats dropped down, seven of them. Daughter and S_I_L wouldn't go near them and suggested I put them in garbage bag to kill them. I actually had to drown them and I could hear them crying...I am not going near the other wall, it too has more panelling and egg cartons. I think I might just get the son who had the drum room to give a hand. Any of you want to volunteer?

(This event took place the night after my husband died and I wonder if he was watching me drowning those poor little rats and thinking badly of me...Still I guess someone had to do it. )

OMG I would just die-you are so brave

This works, I swear. I actually bought these for mice, I had so many that I nhad names for them. They would set inside the burner with their heads out and their front feet up on the pan and watch me sit there 8" from my head. However, they do carry germs and I decided to get rid of them. Buy those hi-sound things that plug in the wall. They also happen to get rid of SPIDERS. Not a spider all winter. You need to get a large one for each room. I wouldn't be surprised if it works for scorpions too. I have a girlfriend that lives in Phoenix. She does mention scorpions but does not complain about the others.....good luck

What school are you going to? I graduate from the University of Phoenix next Sat. the 29 with my Masters in Health Administration?

Welcome to the desert southwest!

I'm here in NM and I've made peace with all but the black widows and scrorpions. Those I mush. Otherwise, I just scoop them into a jar and drop them outside. Spiders are what keep my house relatively free of ants, flies and moths and other things I don't particularly want to live with, and I'm grateful.

I am blisfully free of most things that suck blood, like the mosquitos and black flies I had to deal with in New England and chiggers in the south. I don't see those awful hordes of brown cockroaches that came with every single apartment in Boston and I haven't seen any silverfish under the carpet, either.

I'd probably have taken a newspaper and shooed the tarantula off the back porch. She had work to do and dinner to catch and she wasn't going to find it there.

Sounds like you need some help from Marlin Perkins (remember him?) or Steve the Aussie crocodile hunter.

:lol2: Sorry, couldn't resist:lol2:

Thanks! I am never moving to Tuscon!

Ughhhhh!!! It's Tucson! :angryfire

Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine.

Seriously, everyplace has it's critters. I bet you have some vermin or other assorted creatures where you live.

I'm In Peoria and have only seen hawks and an occasional owl. My problem is ants (outdoors only) and the occasional black widow spider. Move to an established area that's not on the outskirts. Keep in mind that if there is construction going on nearby, you may get some of the evacuees. As far as the widows are concerned, do regular checks around your house for the irregular webs and at night, hit them with the spider spray (it takes a few minutes for them to die once sprayed, so be prepared). I have NEVER seen a tarantua in the wild here. I pay $32 a month for an exterminator, and haven't had any problems with vermin indoors.
