I live in Tucson. I'm on the far northeast side. I've lived here for a few years. The vermin are traumatizing me. I just had an encounter with the BIGGEST SPIDER I HAVE EVER SEEN INSIDE. I'm still shaking. I realized after I saw it that it was too big to kill with a shoe. Long story short, it has left this world and its corpse is on my patio.
I am moving to Phoenix for nursing school soon, when my pre-reqs are done. I know that the newly developed areas have the most insects indoors, but still? Are certain areas worse than others? Does Phoenix have as many 'vermin' as Tucson? Here's what I experience outside: tarantulas on my sidewalk last week, bobcat by trash can a few days ago, a snake by my drive a few weeks ago, and javelina come by my bedroom window at night. Indoors: spiders, roaches, and the occasional scorpion. I have been stung by a scorpion. It actually wasn't too bad. A little nausea, cramps, rapid heart beat, and numbness. (((It's the large spiders that I cannot handle.)))
Lori,
About the Brown Recluse, my husband is terrified by them. We have moved a lot and everywhere we've lived we've had the occasional spider in the house. My husband swears every brown spider he sees is a Recluse and I have to kill it. I think I shall never tell him there really are Recluses in Arizona. He may freak and decide not to move.
I think I may adopt a few kittens and take stock out in Raid.
Ok, now after reading this, I am thougholey nauseus and completely terrified.. I hate spiders, and that is horrible how that guy's hand looked after being bitten by the Brown Recluse..
I am doing my prereq's to get into nursing school, but I have a very weak stomach.. many people said dont worry about it, you'll get desensitized..
Is this true?
I feel such a passion to be a nurse & help people, but I dont want to be throwing up every time I see someone...

Your right they probably didn't feel the need for a lecture, just as most doctors don't lecture patients as to why they don't need antibiotics for a viral infection but prescribe them anyway because its easier. No harm there either.
