Transferring to a school near SF?

Published

Hello, I am a current pre-nursing student at the University of Memphis and I would like to move to San Francisco or near it. Are there any schools I could transfer to without huge complications? :/

Honestly no. This area is insanely saturated with pre nursing and new grads. It's HIGHLY competitive and not new grad friendly because of it. You could try Ukiah, maybe out near Sacramento or Fresno but really the whole state is a mess.

I would strongly urge anyone to finish where they are get at least a year experience and then move.

Agree with the previous poster. Finish where you are and obtain a minimum of one year of experience. Alternatively, contact local SF schools and get an "acceptance" offer in writing before coming out here and being disappointed. Nursing schools in CA are impacted, meaning many wait years to get in and some give up and leave the state to attend school. Somebody attempting to transfer in would have to have an exceptional record to be considered.

I'm in California and, quite honestly, the entire state is impacted in nursing. SF and LA areas are going to be the most competitive, even at community colleges. Not to burst your bubble, but of you don't have at LEAST a 3.75-3.80 GPA then honestly I wouldn't waste money on the application fee for these areas. If you really want to come to CA, then try central California programs. Even then, you would still need about a 3.6 to 3.7 GPA. Not to mention getting a job after graduation. The job market is competitive in Sf as well, and very few new grads get a job.

I'm a California native who wanted to go up to SF as well (was accepted to pre-nursing at SFSU), but financial reasons prevented me from going. Honestly, looking back at it now, a part of me is glad I didn't go because it IS so difficult to get accepted to a program up there. I ended up going to my local state university which is quite a bit easier to get into.

It sounds like a good/fun idea, but it's more stress than it's worth.
