Tough skin with a side order of a grain of salt please?

Anyone else notice:

That a poster comes to AN asking for an opinion...

They are given an opinion...

They don't agree with the opinion...

They get defensive and threaten to leave....

Speaking from a personal point of view, i have been flammed many many times on All Nurses (hello graduate nurse is a nurse thread)

But far from taking it extremely personally, i have taken it with a grain of salt and yes, some posters have written upsetting things, but all in all, i learned more about the reality of Nursing from this message board than from any other media.

All i can say is for the new nurses/students/post lurkers with a nursing dream:

Its not easy during/after school and you HAVE to grow tougher skin and not take everything personally...

otherwise you will be chewed up and spit out by everyone...from environmental services to the highest level of hospital management... (and not by 'nurses eating their young')

On a happier note, if the general nursing threads are too depressing, hop over to the nursing humor! HILARIOUS!!!!!!

I have to agree with the OP. But things work both ways. I think everyone would have to agree that often times a poster asks a very simple, benign question which SOME people porifice, disect, analyze, twist around and reword until they are accusing the person who asked the question of abuse, neglect, witchcraft, spitting on the flag, and drowning kittens.

As far as floppy hats, I wear a big straw sombrero when I am working around the old ranchero.

Gatormommy,

Uh, RNs don't wear calicodresses and floppy hats (No, never. Not even sometimes).

They don't??:eek::eek:

Then just who the heck have I been impersonating all these years?

I've got a calico kitten...does that count? lol

Yeah. IMHO it's not always a concrete, absolute situation. There is room for different opinions, but it becomes a weird battle of having to be right- when it's not necessarily a right or wrong matter- just an opinion, or based on personal experience. And God forbid someone is having a tough day. :uhoh3:

And as with just about everything, people want to be heard....nothing wrong with that- just doesn't have to get carried away to the point of others joining the conversation and not willing to even consider what the other person is saying or feeling.

People can be very direct without being nasty. My life experience guides my interactions, feelings, thoughts, and beliefs...other people obviously have different frames of reference. It doesn't have to be right or wrong- sometimes things just "are".

Someone can tell me to "shut the f*#@ up, you crazy dumba## b*(^%. Or, they can say "hey, would you mind not talking to me right now, I'm really not interested in having conversation", or even "could you leave me alone right now?" One leaves bridges intact, but is still very direct. Even "I really don't think you're right"...instead of pit bull mode.

Maybe it's just a general decline in interactions and people skills. IDK. :crying2: It's also so much harder to detect intent and tone in writing- someone may be writing very calmly, and with no bad intentions- and be perceived as hostile and cold. That's in a lot of forums.

Before I get flamed for being upset last week- that's over. :D The people who were kind enough to PM me with how I might look at things differently instead of using language that was pretty uncalled for were very helpful (don't remember specifics- don't care)... but people can have legit questions, and get blasted. It might help to clarify the intent before assuming incoming hostility. :D JMHO :)

I honestly believe 'words get lost in translation'

Years ago before I was a moderator and lost the right to have a good old argument on here.

I would write on threads, get flamed for something I wrote which in reality was not meant to be argumentative and somebody would get so annoyed with me I would be surprised.

I would go back and read what I had written and would often see that you could read it both ways. Being English on an American Board would often cause me to say/write things differently

Of course I would be tripping through the daisies with a

LOL.... Yeah, I agree. Something happens between the brain and fingers of the person typing to the eyes and brain of the person reading it- :D

Only if you make it wear floppy hats....And then post it on youtube.

Totally agree. People want to hear that nurses are all about skipping through wildflower fields in calico dresses and floppy hats. NOT.

Well, nursing is just like getting your period. Since becoming a nurse: I want to hold really soft things. Like my cat. It makes me feel really pure. Sometimes I just want to run on a beach. I like to twirl. Maybe in slow motion. And I do it in my white spandex. And usually by the third day, I really want to dance...

ha! as soon as I started reading your post I thought to myself, "that must be why nurses originally wore all white." Just like a tampon commercial!

And then they use that blue liquid and I think "Oh, like, that's what it's supposed to look like."

Best commercial EVER!
