Tough skin with a side order of a grain of salt please?

Anyone else notice:

That a poster comes to AN asking for an opinion...

They are given an opinion...

They don't agree with the opinion...

They get defensive and threaten to leave....

Speaking from a personal point of view, i have been flammed many many times on All Nurses (hello graduate nurse is a nurse thread)

But far from taking it extremely personally, i have taken it with a grain of salt and yes, some posters have written upsetting things, but all in all, i learned more about the reality of Nursing from this message board than from any other media.

All i can say is for the new nurses/students/post lurkers with a nursing dream:

Its not easy during/after school and you HAVE to grow tougher skin and not take everything personally...

otherwise you will be chewed up and spit out by everyone...from environmental services to the highest level of hospital management... (and not by 'nurses eating their young')

On a happier note, if the general nursing threads are too depressing, hop over to the nursing humor! HILARIOUS!!!!!!

Well, nursing is just like getting your period. Since becoming a nurse: I want to hold really soft things. Like my cat. It makes me feel really pure. Sometimes I just want to run on a beach. I like to twirl. Maybe in slow motion. And I do it in my white spandex. And usually by the third day, I really want to dance...

You have a very patient cat. My cat won't let me walk from room to room while I'm holding her, never mind twirling on the beach.

That was one of the earlier shows to call it nursing 'school' vs the more popular (at that time) 'training'.... I always think of 'training' as something you do with a leaky puppy or a sword swallower....not nurses. :D

Yes, they are practically mother to all children, and then they say how much AN sux, state they will NOW LEAVE the forum for good.... but, alas they're still heeeerrrrrreeee! PMO.

I know exactly what you mean, still heeeerrrrrreeee vomiting all over the forums, lol.

I always thought The Walton's were stupid. Calico is incredibly ugly and I wouldn't be caught dead in it.

"Floppy hats" requires clarification.

That's all I've got to add for now.

Came out of the semantics of the times; remember anyone could be a "nurse", but some were "trained" by Florence and the nuns. After all, women didn't need "education" :D

You could have a "trained nurse", or someone hired off the street to "nurse" you.

Takes us full circle back to: by whom, and how the words we type are being "heard" here. Back on subject!:lol2:

Sometimes people are too sensitive, but sometimes people post some rude stuff and want to be let off the hook for behaving like a jerk because "hey, just being honest" or "it's just my opinion". You can be blunt without being nasty, and while we are all entitled to opinions, we're not entitled to freedom from any sort of reaction to those opinions.

Being courteous is not being a Pollyanna dancing through a field of wildflowers. I am guilty of being a jerk sometimes, but I don't try to pretend I'm merely being a blunt, straight-shooter. I think it's a good policy to remember that there is a person on the other side of the computer screen.

Totally agree. People want to hear that nurses are all about skipping through wildflower fields in calico dresses and floppy hats. NOT.

Hey we are sorry about that, but you do need to know that TV is not where to get your info. That image is something that some people hang on to dear life trying to believe while they enter the college process - for some, this whole "floppy-hat" deal is all they want out of nursing, (nursing can't be hard now can it?) and when you tell them straight up, they vomit all over the forum.

I laughed so much when I read this! Too true. I call those types of people 'la la people', cos they just want to live in wonderful, kind, la la land where everyone is happy all of the time, and not face the reality of anything. And nursing is a tough, busy, physically and mentally demanding job. And I also blame TV for not showing nursing how it truly is, all the doctors and nurses all falling in love with each other, as if!

I guess I missed those shows !!
