Topic of the Day: GO AWAY FOREIGN NURSES!

World Immigration

Published

This is exactly how I feel each time I log into the International Forum. I don't feel welcome as a foreign born nurse. I don't feel respected as a minority in this country. All I feel is the hatred and insults thrown at us simply because we are not Americans.

So let's talk about it, since threads were locked and posts were deleted because they were "out of the topic" hence we could not freely express and justify how we feel about the criticisms on foreign born and/or foreign trained nurses. Each and every time I read something that "put down" certain minorities, it makes me feel sick to my stomach. Being discriminated all my life, I truly understand how other foreign nurses, especially the Filipino nurses, feel. No, you simply won't understand if you were not in our shoes.

Every one has his/her point of view on certain issues, but attacking, criticizing and (worst) making generalizations of other races, cultures and beliefs is just not right, insensitive and ethnocentric. Yes, we are immigrants, but you don't have to yell it to our face. The US would not have prosper if not for the immigrants. Don't forget your family or ancestors were once immigrants as well, unless you are Native Americans. So you have no rights to ask us get out if we are legally here, unless this is your native land. Remember, America is the land of opportunity that were built through slavery from Africa and Asia.

I wonder sometimes, how could you be a professional nurse if you are culturally insensitive? How could you offer the best care if all you think is your own self and your own beliefs, and disregard other culture and belief systems? I see nurses here with 30 plus years of experience do not practice the basic fundamental of nursing. Maybe they should go back to square one and learn it from Potter and Perry.

This IS an International forum. This forum is for every one regardless of age, gender, color, etc. If you say something culturally insensitive in other forum, maybe we will think that you are just plain stupid or has never been out of the country. But, if you are persistently saying something that insult and disgrace other cultures, races, nationality and etc, I think something should be done by the moderators...unless the moderators themselves are not sensitive enough on this issue as well.

Well, Merry Christmas everyone (no, I'm not Christian...but I know many are here) and thank you for listening.

Ahh but if you choose to do so no one can blame you. It's NOT their neighborhood. Same reason I drink on Sunday. Same reason church's ring their bells and mosques do the call to prayer on loud speakers.

Sharing. It's ours... Not theirs or mine.

There was a time where you couldn't walk in a neighborhood because you wore the wrong skin that day...

Ah, Stanley, way to miss the point. It's called respect.

Ah, Stanley, way to miss the point. It's called respect.

That's not respect. That's consideration and you can't demand it. Nor can you demand respect.

The example has nothing to do with what is going on here. Some posted a thread about 'hey, Americans are coming into our forums and being racist and ethnocentric.'

Of course, as with all posts it shows up on the main page. Some read it. After the 10th or 11th 'All Americans' are rude and mean and racist post, which is what they were, some responded with 'Um, no we aren't.'

Immediately those that responded are considered rude, off topic, inconsiderate, and what not. They should stay out of this forum because it's not theirs. Etc., etc.

The mods come and say cool it no one is breaking TOS and guess what. Same people call them bigoted as well.

That's laughable. It's quite obvious where the truly rude and disrespectful posts are coming from.

Where's the disrespect. Show one disrespectful post here from a non-foreign poster.

don't you think it's not disrespectful when you keep on posting comments that is not related to the original topic of the thread?

don't you find it disrespectful and rude if someone questions your skill and knowledge without knowing you personally?

don't you find it upsetting being bunched together with the rude,know-it-all american posters here?

The OP was about rude Americans was it not?

Who questioned you personally. Every example has been explicit in stating who they were talking about. No one made generalizations. They talk about coworkers that they KNOW. Not you.

I find it disrespectful that you consider all americans rude and know it all. Thank you for making my point. ;)

ETA:

There are only 3 outcomes of a thread.

1) They get old and die.

2) They go off topic or get out of hand or hijacked AND get closed by admins.

3) They evolve.

Threads that either go way off topic or get rudely out of hand are stopped by the admins. If they haven't stopped it or redirected then the assumption is that it is neither rudely out of hand or off topic or hijacked.

Ah but several of us posting here have experienced working with newly arrived IENs. From the same age group, training, and nationality of the posters who were the cause of the original problem.

This time last year, the Canadian forum was full of posts from "the land of nurses", the "best educated nurses in the world", "we are coming to save your healthcare system", and best of all "we will show you the best care comes from nurses from the land of nurses".

Well, they've arrived, been assessed and found wanting in some cases. There are no more bragging posts from these nurses who arrived in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Reality hit them and some of them were asked to go home. We don't hear the refrain as often any more about being the best in the world. Now we have BScN-RNs wanting to know how to become LPNs (it was discovered that many BScN programmes only educated to the PN level in some provinces).

So forgive us for being cynical but when you've worked with six "imported" nurses and two were asked to leave, three are settling in fine (after very lengthy orientations, longer than local new grads get), and one remains hopeless, we are entitled to our opinions.

****sorry,to say it isn't.it's about some posters here in ITNL. forum who've been religously trying to generalize foreign nurses from the little facts they knew about them.

Who questioned you personally. Every example has been explicit in stating who they were talking about. No one made generalizations. They talk about coworkers that they KNOW. Not you.

****this is what Lawrence 01 was saying, if you just stumbled upon this thread recently, you wouldn't know the real score.there are posters here who've been generalizing and commenting how incompetent foreign nurses are.

I find it disrespectful that you consider all americans rude and know it all. Thank you for making my point. ;)

****so now you know how the foreign nurses feel...when some posters try to bunch them together with some incompetent nurses that they knew.

yes, you are indeed entitled to your opinion. but i know you will agree that it is not the general conclusion. right?

i don't know about the posts you were saying about RP nurses bragging about their abilities so i can't really comment on that.maybe you can direct me to it with a link?

i can only speak of things that i know of so i hope you as well won't make a hasty conclusion about foreign nurses in general with the six "imported" nurses you came across with.

While still a hot topic after 14 pages, what about some further constructive debate. Does anyone have data or stats to show that foreign nurses as a whole are or are not competent?

Sure seems like a lot of anecdotal evidence to me, and quite limited, at that.

The english exams actually are all at university level, it just depends on wich passing level/degree is accepted. In Canada for instance your speaking passing score for TOEFL ibt is 28 points out of 29 max. Elsewhere they accept 26 or so. With IELTS passing scores start allready at 6.5 max would be 9, so that would be significantly lower.

Thanks for the clarification on the exams....I'm not doubting what you're telling me, but I really do have hard with this because I see very poor English skills when they do come here and work in the US...

The point is, if people come to the international forum looking for information about licensure, or immigration, or venting because they are frustrated that there are no visas... why do you care? Why would you feel the need to comment and go on about how you don't want them in the US and you're glad of retrogression? Yes, there's free speech, blah blah - but what's the POINT? What do you get out of it?

Someone once gave me good advice about posting online. Ask three questions before posting: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

I seriously think you need to reread my post...Please do so because I did also state that I'm all for immigration because my parents migrated here from Cuba...At this point retrogression is necessary due to what's happening in the economy here right now...I also stated that once retrogression is lifted and if the opportunity knocks, then come here and good luck on your success....But I guess you didn't get that far....and yes, I'm glad and that's my right to feel like this....What's the point? The point is that I have a right to state it, and I shouldn't be offending anybody because I'm not making personal attacks and calling people imbeciles, idiots, etc....If I were then yes, I would be offending a lot of people...but I'm not doing that why? It's not necessary, that's not the point of this forum...If I were violating TOS then yes, but I'm not.....I'm sorry if me agreeing with retrogression is offending you....that's not what is meant....if you don't like my posting, then I highly recommend you to just skip over them and don't read them...that's your right...

Ah, Stanley, way to miss the point. It's called respect.

Agree....but respect is a two way street....it just doesn't go one way....but I did like the example you gave...It did make me laugh....thanks!
