If you were to make reasons to not go into nursing, what would they be?

When I interviewed a nurse, his number one reason was MONEY.

1. Money

What are some additional reasons?

The lousy work hours.

Don't go into nursing expecting gratitude or appreciation. You are going to get yelled at and insulted by staff, patients and family just for doing your job.

You said it. Also, sometimes it depends on the unit you work on, but I've realized that nursing is an under appreciated profession, most especially by the pt!

Another reason: stress.

'Nuff said.

Does any one else find it difficult to work with CNA's? I honestly think I would love my job a lot more if I didnt have to work with them. They are disrespectful and insubordinate. I was a nurse aide for 2 years before becoming a nurse and I dont recall ever treating the nurses the way the ones I work with do. I've only ever worked in nursing homes so I'm not sure if this is a common problem in hospitals as well or if they just act the way they do because they are burnt out? but I'm going back to school to get my RN so that I'll have more opportunities as far as careers and maybe find something where I dont have to work with them. Does any one else experience this with their CNA's? :uhoh3:

If you have no emotional intelligence you should probably find another profession. Inability to intuit things is a hindrance. Also if you are in this for the money, don't value nurses or nursing yourself or have no interest in a lifetime of learning, stay away.

dealing with the issues of other women and the endless catfights!

wish there were more men so i had more sensible conversational oppurtunities instead of the latest hair/makeup/boyfriend/husband/pregnancy/kid/she said " "/ and the other endless junk. how about intelligent conversations about the advance of medicine and genetics as it pertains to our scientific based nursing care on our floor? oh wait, then you would have to read and maybe . . . gasp, study !!!

:banghead:

oh it truly felt better to get that out! thanks! :o

:yeah::up:

You guys are making me really reeeeally thankful for my unit. I'm also a little afraid of what is out there at other hospitals! We're so spoiled. We present our own patients in rounds, we are part of the team when it comes to treatment decisions, our docs listen to us, our medical director is completely cool and hangs out with us in the breakroom at lunch instead of the cushy conference room with the other docs. Our nurse manager is fabulous as well! We help each other out with admissions, boosts, codes, schedules switches, etc. I think I better just never ever change jobs by the sound of what I hear here! Yikes!!

Don't go into nursing if you are unable to put aside personal prejudices and feelings about different types of people. For example, you may have to take care of prisoners, drug addicts, the homeless, illegal immigrants, etc. Our personal opinions cannot affect our care towards anyone and this is very difficult for some nurses.

Have you ever thought that maybe you were disrespectful to the CNA's? I found that if you give respect that you get it back in return. Throughout my career I have been a CNA, LPN, and an RN. I have noticed that the nurses who feel that they are above the CNA's are the ones who have the most problems. Just think about how you approach the CNA's because that may the reason that they are "disrespectful and insubordinate" toward you.;)
